Suggestion: Switch VLC listing to VLC Portable
While VLC used to be mostly portable when launched with the commandline switches, this isn't the case any longer. Now, VLC creates APPDATA\vlc and APPDATA\dvdcss on the local PC. It leaves behind ml.xspf, vlc-qt-interface.ini and a font cache file on every PC it is run on. And on every PC without VL...

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird Portable privacy issue
@johnhaller - I couldn't find TB portable 2.0.0.24 on the portableapps.com site. As judging from this thread - http://portableapps.com/node/23080 - some people (including me) would prefer to see it as well. You're welcome to grab it from SourceForge but you absolutely should not be using it anymore...

Re: alternative portable versions of thunderbird and firefox
Any portable Thunderbird app that doesn't have a launcher stay in the background will leave your account name (which may be your email address) in HCKU. Both Firefox and Thunderbird will leave multiple traces in APPDATA and HKCU as well. Keep in mind that PortableApps.com has received permission fro...

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird Portable privacy issue
Current version should not have this issue. It was an old bug around some Windows versions not having the registry key already in existence (although it should exist) and the launcher not interpreting that properly. TBP 3.1.6 should not have this issue and has code specifically to test and correct f...

Re: Download link for x64 software versions
I was under the very wrong impression that most 32-bit applications would run normally on a x64 system. Most 32-bit applications work perfectly fine on an x64 system. The only exceptions are file managers that are 64-bit unaware (which generally won't have a 64-bit version either), things that requ...

Re: Download link for x64 software versions
Really, the only way I see portable x64 software now is with a launcher that has both x86 and x86-64 and chooses the right one at startup. Every other option is bad. But it's on devs' heads (WTF not MS devs' only?), not database maintainers. So yeah, I think it's gonna cause a lot of troubles too, ...

Re: Download link for x64 software versions
I think it may make more sense to only indicate when an x64 version is required on 64-bit Windows. Some utilities are like this. In general, there's no real performance benefit to using the 64-bit version of a given app, so most major apps are 32-bit only and will be for some time. The exceptions ar...

7-Zip Portable 9.19 Beta
For folks that are interested, we just released an update of 7-Zip Portable 4.65 adding in portablization of favorites and last open folder (which involved some fun interpretation of registry hex entries) and full unicode support. We also posted 7-Zip Portable 9.19 Beta which installs alongside in 7...

Re: Portable Freeware Submission - .net category
It should probably be a special one if it is with apps and updates not listed on the homepage or the main RSS feed. .NET apps still won't work on most public PCs (library, school, net cafe, hotel business center) as most of those are XP without .NET manually added to them. We're adding it at Portabl...

Made several entries to: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\ username@domain.com It's your account name (not your email address unless you name your account the same as your email address instead of "Personal", "Work", etc) and it's a useless Windows feature to show your unre...

Re: Stop PEStudio Updates
I understand your need to thrash PortableApps.com, but this is independent of that. :-P Showing an app over and over in the updated app list and RSS feed makes those lists much less useful if a given app always appears. It's that much less room for other updated apps to show and less functional to h...

Stop PEStudio Updates
Can we please stop including every single PEStudio update? It's gotten to the point of being absolutely comical. There have been 9 updates so far this month. And this is after updating the last 4 days (every day) of last month. That's 13 updates in 30 days. For a pretty minor app. And the app is sti...

Re: Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch Portable
I can imagine it may be helpful when you want to listen to audiobooks in foreign languages and slowing it down (maybe not by 800%) will make it easier to understand. Not really. You'd be better off doing that with Audacity or similar. Paul Stretch is completely geared towards extreme stretching, es...
