CLI Database Discussions - defining CLI and GUI

But by that logic, you'd exclude many very useful tools like HandBrake, IfanView, Inkscape, SubtitleEdit, etc, that provide very useful, superior or even unique functions through their CLI mode. They would clearly be marked as dual GUI+CLI tools. Again, this is not from a strict classification stan...

Re: CLI Database Discussions

Ultimately it's up to you. I wouldn't include VLC in the CLI database, but I'm not stopping you if you want to add it. Even though it can convert files from the command line and thus can be used as a replacement for ffmpeg for example? Yes, because it, uh, is a GUI program. "CLI by exclusion" as yo...

It was meant as a joke!
But thanks for the insight!
Ah, sorry. I'm a non-native English speaker and the other meaning of the word didn't even come to my mind.

Re: CLI Database Discussions

Interesting. What I take from this is: CLI by exclusion. The mode of usage: GUI/commands. Yeah, that's pretty much how I'd define it. GUI with CLI mode, like Inkscape. It can have all the features of a GUI program while having a CLI mode in addition . MPC-HC can be made (even just with parameters) ...

Re: CLI Database Discussions

I think there are grey areas: For example, gplay.exe is such a simple console player that it has no options or output or window or anything. It just plays the audio file you throw at it . But so does pretty much any other GUI media player if you do app.exe file.mp3 . Does the lack of a GUI window a...

Re: China blocks TLS 1.3

Global politics aside, the power of the few big tech firms are terrifying. We have all read news about how small companies get destroyed when they disappear off Google's search results, or Apple takes down an app from their app store. A friend told me recently an app developed by an acquaintance's ...

China blocks TLS 1.3

https://www.zdnet.com/article/china-is-now-blocking-all-encrypted-https-traffic-using-tls-1-3-and-esni/ By disallowing TLS 1.3 and almost certainly future versions of TLS when they arrive, China blocks evolution of encryption technology. Likewise, by blocking ESNI, they ensure that their Great Fire...

Re: Some AV protection

Revisiting the topic, I recently came across this unsettling info regarding antivirus software... :astonished: RACK911 Labs has come up with a unique but simple method of using directory junctions (Windows) and symlinks (macOS & Linux) to turn almost every antivirus software into self-destructive t...

Re: VPN experiences so far (seeking recommendations)

I just did a quick search for NordVPN since it's the one I see advertised the most and came up with this note on wikipedia --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NordVPN NordVPN is based in Panama, as the country has no mandatory data retention laws and does not participate in the Five Eyes or Fourteen ...

Re: Why are free-to-play games so successful

For the record, things are worse on mobile than on PC. PC gamers aren't willing to put up with as much abuse as mobile gamers. The video I shared is specifically about the mobile side of things. The reason for the way mobile games work is that mobile games sucked in a lot of people who had never pla...

Microsoft made a bunch of changes in a new insider preview build. Most notably, the calculator now supports graphing.
