Re: open source

OpenOffice.org Draw is a Visio clone, but I am aware of no freeware (open source or otherwise) which is full-up compatible with Visio.

As long as we are talking about the difficulty of downloading large files, the IP protocol does not provide an adequate end-to-end check. On a large file, it is not only possible but even likely that it will contain one or more errors. An MD5 or SHA1 has may tell you it’s hosed, but it won’t help yo...

Fluxulf: How did you determine that it didn't write to the registry? I extracted it with universal extractor and HashCalc saved its settings in the registry.

However, the default settings are reasonable and the number of settings is small, so it's portable for my purposes but not stealth.

Something I learned using TrueCrypt is that if a volume is mounted as "removable", Windows will not create a "Recycle Bin". Conversely, if volume is mounted "fixed" then Windows creates not only a "Recycle Bin", but "System Restore" data as well. So, one possible work-around is to put everything imp...

Not portable by any means, but a good idea.

I've been looking to set up instant messaging where the messages never leave the LAN for a long time.

Web site says it requires .NET, so it's not portable.

Also, the methods used in this program are common and can be detected with statistical techniques.

Look at http://portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2705&start=32 IMHO, "Kakasoft folder Protector" could be better thought out. Also, it depends on Windows Explorer quirks/bugs. Other shells/directory listers will reveal your hidden folder. Use Truecrypt or equivalent for real security. FG

I want to be able to connect my portable hard drive to any computer too, but i can't do that! Assuming that it's not a simple thing like plugging the drive in: 1) Is loading the Truecrypt driver the problem? If you don't have administrator rights you can use TCExplorer to read your encrypted contai...

I run file deletion software such as disk redactor frequently (It lowers the hits if I do need to recover accidentally deleted files) if this software marks the files deleted would my redactor erase them? Using the Original encryption technology Does "Original" mean that you invented the encryption algorithm? If so, who has vetted it to make sure it's really secure. Most home-brew ciphers are easily broken by a knowledgeable cryptanalyst. You are far better off using a standard algorithm like AES wh...

This application is not portable. The changes it makes in the registry are fundamental to its operation. While it can hide files from Windows Explorer and applications which repackage it, the files are not hidden from software which roots through the file system on its own. It's a classic example of...

What does a read-only switch do exactly? Does it just disconnect one of the data lines from the rest of the system? If so, you could do that by modifying a USB extension cable. The read-only switch disconnects the write-enable line between the USB flash controller and the flash chip. In the case th...
