Re: Would someone please clue me into portable apps?

I just want an executable that I have on a USB flash drive or external HDD and run the program from that, is that not how portables work? And the portables I have been trying to use have mainly been from portableapps.com. The applications seem to want me to download their software, what is going on...

Re: WinSCPP - Portable WinSCP Bundle

Is anyone aware if Pageant, which is bundled with PuTTYPortable on PortableApps.com, is by itself portable? Since it doesn't get installed with KiTTYPortable only PuTTYPortable, and I'd like to use KiTTY with WinSCP instead of PuTTY but wasn't sure if the binary is portable per se. I know for exampl...

Re: Which comments on app listings should be deleted?

Or should we be thinning out stuff that doesn't apply any more? For clarity, is the proposed threshold for deletion only short, low info comments like those in the OP, or a broader variety of comments about older versions? As there would be a large number of comments across the site that are versio...

Re: ln - command line hard links

I had no idea this method of backup is called Delorean Copy, so the way to do this via command line is: Interesting term :D I normally see this method referred to as snapshotting. For example rsnapshot for Linux (a popular utility that leverages rsync) uses this same method, where hardlinks are use...

Re: Blender - open source 3D creation

Also can we submit new screenshot images for the app page? On the left side of entries, below the program icon image, there will be an 'Edit this entry' link that becomes visible when logged in. From there the screenshot and everything else can be updated. Edit: while writing this post it appears A...

I have updated the Best of page with the latest results.
Thanks for the update. Looks like TP109 beat me to it but it appears Sumo was accidentally added to best of rather than simplewall.

Quoted so it'll display as a notification ;)

Re: Runoff for 2020-2021 best portablefreeware

I like that Handbrake is represented now in the DB, it's an excellent program. One downside since v1.5.1 I learned recently is it only supports W10 now, which is a pity for anyone on W8.1 for example. simplewall caught my eye in the nominations and it seems like a robust utility and something I'd be...

Attached are the updated graphics for 2020-21 since I remembered the last set I posted were for 2020 only.

Looks like a decent number of entries :)

Re: Picture Viewers for Very Large Graphic Files

Here are four picture viewers (mostly portable) able to open very large images (size tested: 175Mb): I'd like to mention that Pictus (portable and in the PFDB) opens this no problem. Takes about 12 seconds to progressively load in on my current system and once loaded zoom and pan is like any other ...

Re: Site seems to be lacking/missing/maybe just slow on updates recently?

Have you tested online only inoreader.com? Has been my number one RSS reader for quite some time now and as you seem more comfortable with browser based solutions it just might fill the bill. Not fond of readers which require some account to use but I can see how for some it'd be useful to have it ...

Re: Yandex lies

Yeah, they do that just a few weeks after registration. It's complete BS of course. Been going on for years. Basically delaying what in reality is a phone requirement for registration for those uncomfortable with adding one from the outset. Eventually someone added this as a note to Wikipedia's 'Com...

Re: Site seems to be lacking/missing/maybe just slow on updates recently?

Personally I was a bit more active in updating entries of programs that I used when I had an RSS reader in the browser I was using. It's great when the notifications come to you in that way. Firefox had a solid one prior to moving to the Quantum addon architecture and that would keep me up-to-date b...

Re: Tucows put out to pasture

Tucows would be completely irrelevant if it wasn't for them running Hover. It's remarkable how long their freeware site remained online since I've literally never seen it linked to or mentioned for like 20 years.
