Re: .NET Applications

Add Vista+W7 popularity numbers (2nd column) and you have 27.22%, which is shared by all versions <= 3.0. 8.23% for 3.5 is the W7 popularity level. You're right - good call. So this statistic is somewhat less relevant... See, webfork? no one disputes the voice of Microsoft JohnTHaller's idea sounds...

Re: .NET Applications

I do not agree. I want to be able run my apps everywhere, regardless of everything, including OS family. I define portability level as percentage of machines on which app rans, over all machines that I use (average weighted by amount of time spent with each machine). This concept could be generaliz...

Re: .NET Applications

If you look closer at the JTH stats, you'll see that he says about .NET "included" an it seems he means "preinstalled with the OS". BTW the listing is flawed in that it thinks there are <= 0% Non-Windows PCs. I wonder if the NetApp is too. Well, the the .NET framework isn't prei...

Re: .NET Applications

Its difficult to concisely explain why someone can be honest and yet their numbers are incorrect, but its the nature of statistics. Additionally, although I'm pleased you've found a trust model that works well for you, I have no such method so in the mean time I have to rely to the best of my abili...

Re: .NET Applications

I didn't mean it as an offence to anyone, the internet doesn't convey tone of voice very well. What I meant was, the .NET framework is so powerful (and does so much for you) that I feel like I'm cheating when I code with it, as the finished product would not be possible without so much hard work fr...

Re: .NET Applications

Haha, it's Matthew but most call me Matty. And I'm very much English... I'm a fan of .NET because it cuts development time down to a fraction. Recently for my final year thesis project, I have written an IDE and compiler for the SERCAL language (proprietary language in the telemetry engineering ind...

Re: .NET Applications

@webfork - It seems M@tty is more qualified than myself to answer most of your points, however regarding your question Do dot net 2.0 applications require the latest bug fixes for 2.0 to run the latest software? Or can they run the stuff packaged in with WinXP? Seeing that no .NET version is package...

Re: .NET Applications

How does it relate to portability? I am merely suggesting that the popularity statistics, on whose relevance we agree, are likely to grow with time (I edited my post to clarify that) Why do you consider this source reliable? It doesn't quote own source and is not a known to me (so also "not a ...

.NET Applications

I know there has been some discussion about these, but I haven't seen a thread dedicated to it and as a .NET developer myself I have a few points to make Obviously .NET will not be present on every computer, but consider: Windows Vista comes with .NET 3.0 and Windows 7 comes with .NET 3.5 ( source )...

StreamRecorder.NET

Intro StreamRecorder.NET is a free, open source (.NET 3.5SP1) GUI front end for programs related to the capturing of streaming media. I know .NET applications are a heated subject around here, so let the people have their say. Note however that whether you like it or not, as far as Microsoft is con...
