Re: The Electron framework and portable software

Another interesting quote... In 1997, Id software released Quake 2 , a 3D-accelerated game that was capable of delivering 60 frames per second on machines from that time. This means that every 16 ms the engine had to process hundreds of polygons, textures, dynamic lights, AI, physics, animations, mu...

Re: The Electron framework and portable software

Not to beat a proverbial dead horse, but we now have Electron programs galore and words of warning are forever becoming -- this lengthy quote was taken from a rather insightful article on modern web development (highlights are mine). Let’s try desktop versions of the applications we need, like Postm...

DefenderUI (DotNET system utility)

[ Note: The following 3 posts were merged into the present topic, as it predates them and concerns the same program .] Quick post for DefenderUI , a freeware I've seen repeated mentions lately. Alas, after ( Uni )extracting its installer, I realized it depends on a service (' DefenderUIService.exe '...

Re: Simple x264/x265 Launcher

Maybe a little refresh of the portability info is in order then... Simple x264/x265 Launcher can be run in a " portable " mode. This may be helpful, for example, if you want to run the application directly from your USB stick, and on different machines. There is no separate portable versio...

Re: Checking portability of an already installed program

I see. Without an installer, it'll be difficult to replicate all the system changes made by the program upon installing. I suggest you try to locate the folder where the program resides, just copy it to the new computer and see if it complains about any missing components -- which you'll then...

Quick note to point that above mentioned LadyBird project now has its own dedicated website: https://ladybird.org/ Another marginally related but rather interesting project is Servo : Servo aims to provide an independent, modular, embeddable web rendering engine, allowing developers to deliver conte...

Re: Checking portability of an already installed program

From the top of my head, you'd have to ensure that program's installation wasn't interfering in the least with your portability goals -- and the easiest and quickest way to do that would be to uninstall the suspect, ensuring no changes or traces were left behind (although not natively portable itsel...

Re: Signal - cross-platform secure messaging (64-bit only)

Nevertheless, there's always a spark behind all the smoke... As reported by BleepingComputer in 2018, when Signal Desktop for Windows or Mac is installed, it creates an encrypted SQLite database to store a user's messages. This database is encrypted using a key generated by the program and without i...
