Re: Easiest & Quickest tool to clone Linux ??

Caveat: I've not had to do this myself, so my suggestions are based on theory rather than practice. I know that you are using Ubuntu, but the Arch Linux wiki can often be very helpful - in this case its Disk Cloning page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Disk_cloning lists several possibilities. ...

Re: PirateBox (local wireless networking)

I have everything within arm's length needed to set up a Raspberry Pi piratebox. I also have a TP-Link router running OpenWRT that I might be able to use. Yesterday I got DokuWiki running on a Raspberry Pi. Performance is fine provided you treat the Pi as a server and access the wiki from a browser ...

Re: OneNote is now free

Thank you shnbwmn for those tests. I don't have a windows machine here any more so I was hoping someone would check them out. Microsoft's shenanigans with the windows 10 upgrade drove me away from windows completely. I've done a bit more playing around with them, and other linux only software, and s...

Re: OneNote is now free

I've been looking into note taking software myself recently, but from a linux, doesn't need to be portable viewpoint. That said, the following look promising for my purposes and look like they run on windows. I'll give links to their entries on the alternativeto.net site so you can see a brief summa...

Re: Registerware policy poll

I don't think that registerware is necessarily evil. The registration could be needed to provide a service of benefit to the user (I'm thinking of things like cloud storage and webmail here). On the other hand it could be a way of collecting email addresses, and possibly other personal information, ...

Re: Yahoo blocks adblock users

I would give up on Yahoo now. This ad-blocking mail-blocking stunt is obviously something that they are considering, and if it doesn't go ahead in its current form, something similar is likely to appear in its place. What might be worth doing is to set up your free mail accounts so that they forward...

Re: Windows 9 is... Windows 10

Interesting reading. I have Windows 7 on a desktop (that I only use for playing games on nowadays) and a laptop. My main machine runs Manjaro Linux. The counter-measures I will be applying shortly will be to install Linux everywhere. I think I will also dump my microsoft mail and OneDrive account fo...

Re: Adware policy concerns

That's problematic if the old version of the program is no longer available. In particular, in some cases the license doesn't allow redistribution and therefore no one can legally distribute old versions. In that case, delete the old entry for the program, and create a new one for the new version. ...

Re: Adware policy concerns

In my view what you call bundleware is malware, simply because it tries to trick you into installing unwanted software. It might say that it is, for example, OpenCandy that will be installed, but how can you check that that is what the payload really is? Would it be possible to treat software that h...

Re: Forum search permissions

To put the new search flood interval in perspective, the ArchLinux website forum search uses a 60s flood interval. This is rather frustrating when your search doesn't find what you were looking for and need to try again. A brief experiment I tried there suggests that 15s would not cause any signific...

Re: New designs for TPFC by tproli

There is a link from a program's entry in the collection to its forum topic, but there is no corresponding link from a program's forum topic to its software collection entry unless one of the forum entries happens to have included the link. Would it be useful to add such a link?

Re: AxCrypt2Go & AxDecrypt

an adware offer doesn't necessarily mean that the program's security is compromised I agree, but equally it doesn't necessarily mean that the program's security is uncompromised either. I regard it as a warning flag. the main problem I have with such adware offers as OpenCandy, or various toolbars ...

Re: AxCrypt2Go & AxDecrypt

That inclusion of OpenCandy means that I will probably never use AxCrypt2Go. I regard all online advertising as a potential source of malware and do whatever I can to avoid it. The dubious decision to include OpenCandy means that I could now only trust this software if I built it myself from source ...

Re: Base64 Encoder/Decoder

Thanks for that tip. That is exactly why I needed to decode base64. I had received a mail on my hotmail account saying that due to unexpected activity I had to validate my hotmail account details. Suspiciously, the hotmail system itself had disabled a link in the email for my safety. The raw header ...
