m^(2) I don't want to labour this small thread; I suspect that we'll continue to differ/agree on some aspects. Just proves though what an interesting Forum this is. I will pick up on one point. Whilst I'm no fan of these console apps (I had my fill of them in the early 80s), you make a very good poi...

U3 question
Just wanted to ask a 'newbie' type question.
There are a few portable applications which are stated to be U3 applications.
Do these run ok on a standard (non-U3) flash-drive?
Is there any tweak I have to do?
Thanks in anticipation.

# m^(2) 1. You state Regular TRiD doesn't reqire .NET True but by implication you seem to be saying that all command-line utilities should be included in the Database because that is what TrID is! IMHO command-line utilities should continue to be excluded. 2. You ask Is it a problem to take VB runt...

Overall I'm quite happy to go with Andrew. The definition which causes me most problems is It must not rely on any particular platform runtimes] I am not bothered if the app requires .NET or Java . I'm satisfied that such apps should not appear in the Database. But I hope that they are mentioned in ...

AVI Repair programs
I was recently trying to repair an AVI file. Surfed for possible solutions and came across these three. 1. AVImedic v 5.3a http://www.geocities.com/avimedic/ Advanced analysis and repair algorithm scans the header, video, audio and index. An unwatchable AVI can be restored back to perfect working or...

@Devils Advocate I agree with most of the points you make. Obviously this specific topic is not the place for a full blown debate but I hope that Andrew etc does seek views. I think we can all accept that this is not a simple issue. In the end I'll fit in with the mods' decisions. (Actually what els...

I recently had a need for a file identifier and eventually found TrIDNET. It works very well indeed and a point to make is that although the program may be a little old, the definitions are bang uptodate. Nonetheless it is true that it requires NET Framework. Now that doesn't matter to me - the comp...
