but the ability to search inside office file types is hard to beat and I'm trying to avoid multiple, overlapping tools running at once.
I use HDDB for searching file names. For searching inside content, I use SearchMyFiles. Results are not immediate, but the program is lightweight.

Re: Audacity - multi-track audio editor

I needed to load Audacity with ffmpeg, but wanted to keep ffmpeg in its own directory. You can do this by setting the following relative path for ffmpeg in Audacity: .\\Portable Settings\\ffmpeg\\avformat-55.dll This is if you're using Audacity in native portable mode and when you download ffmpeg in...

Acoustica Basic Edition 6

This is an old version of the Acoustica audio editor, however it works very well. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/r2DhCJD5mAZGe4ygSQe9A5-970-80.jpg.webp It's no longer supported though, but for most people, this should do the job for basic editing tasks. Re: Sazanami (Audio Editor)

I tried to find some information on this editor online, but most sites incorrectly attribute Sazanami to the Codecpack website. Official website is here: https://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA027069/#nami A quick review: I found the interface to be a little unintuitive. If I want to start playback from ...

Re: Removing Windows 95/98/ME?

There are still 32-bit PCs, namely Intel Atom CPUs that run Windows 10. Very interesting. I guess there must be some substantial power differences to make them hang onto that. Yeah, there are still netbooks, tablets and Windows sticks that run 32-bit. I had a Windows 32-bit tablet, but sold it a fe...

Re: Sazanami (Audio Editor)

Thanks for posting about Sazanami, loin2kolpotoru. I'm always on the lookout for good audio editors, so this will be a welcome addition! I haven't run the program yet, but I just checked the yaP launcher and the only modification you made was to remove the saved filedata at %APPDATA%. So I'm guessin...

Re: Removing Windows 95/98/ME?

Just four days shy of 10 years after I originally posted about old Windows versions: a project I really like talking about intentionally dropping 32-bit: https://www.zettlr.com/post/discontinuing-32-bit ... I'm not sure if this unfortunate or way overdue, but I think other projects are going to fol...

Re: PDFArranger (PDF changer utility)

Thanks for the in-depth tutorial, Cornflower, but I prefer Briss as I mentioned before. It can select exactly what you want to crop. If you need to fine-tune the dimensions, you can set the size manually. Briss works especially well when scanning books as it overlays all the odd and even pages so yo...

Re: PDFArranger (PDF changer utility)

I had a need to scan something and I wanted to crop the borders of the PDF manually. However, this app doesn't offer the ability to set the cropping. It only has an auto-crop, which doesn't work for my needs. Is there another app that can do manual cropping of PDFs? It might be possible to do so in ...

Re: Combine batch of images into a PDF

Yes, this is a great thread! I still need to try the Faststone solution as mentioned by webfork. I'm going to need to scan some stuff soon, so this thread will be handy to read through again.

Irfanview is missing from the "Image to PDF" section. Not sure if Irfanview also applies to "PDF to image" though.

Re: Electron "collection" apps (e.g. Ferdi)

In the specific case of using Ferdi to manage your messaging services, I'm against using it. Just use the browser version of those apps in your existing browser and you get the benefit of using extensions to block ads and tracking.

I found a test version on the AkelPad forums with the version number 4.9.9 dev, last updated on July 2019. At least this is better than nothing!

Re: AkelPad (ultra lightweight text editor)

Even though the last official update was in 2016, there have been trickling updates as late as September 2020: https://sourceforge.net/p/akelpad/codesvn/4413/log/ Hopefully we'll see a new official release sometime soon. According to the dev log, biggest changes include supporting 64-bit and native ...

Re: Best Firefox add-ons [was "plugin(s)"]

I fail to grasp your intended implications, care to explain them? The whole point of AdNauseum is to confuse ad companies by providing fake interest data via ad clicks. If you block the ads or don't click on the ads, ad companies can't construct an accurate profile without some form of browser fing...
