Re: PDFArranger (PDF changer utility)
Thanks for the in-depth tutorial, Cornflower, but I prefer Briss as I mentioned before. It can select exactly what you want to crop. If you need to fine-tune the dimensions, you can set the size manually. Briss works especially well when scanning books as it overlays all the odd and even pages so yo...

Re: PDFArranger (PDF changer utility)
I had a need to scan something and I wanted to crop the borders of the PDF manually. However, this app doesn't offer the ability to set the cropping. It only has an auto-crop, which doesn't work for my needs. Is there another app that can do manual cropping of PDFs? It might be possible to do so in ...

Re: Combine batch of images into a PDF
Yes, this is a great thread! I still need to try the Faststone solution as mentioned by webfork. I'm going to need to scan some stuff soon, so this thread will be handy to read through again.

Re: PDF tools grouped by feature
Irfanview is missing from the "Image to PDF" section. Not sure if Irfanview also applies to "PDF to image" though.

Re: Electron "collection" apps (e.g. Ferdi)
In the specific case of using Ferdi to manage your messaging services, I'm against using it. Just use the browser version of those apps in your existing browser and you get the benefit of using extensions to block ads and tracking.

Re: AkelPad (ultra lightweight text editor)
I found a test version on the AkelPad forums with the version number 4.9.9 dev, last updated on July 2019. At least this is better than nothing!

Re: AkelPad (ultra lightweight text editor)
Even though the last official update was in 2016, there have been trickling updates as late as September 2020: https://sourceforge.net/p/akelpad/codesvn/4413/log/ Hopefully we'll see a new official release sometime soon. According to the dev log, biggest changes include supporting 64-bit and native ...

Re: Best Firefox add-ons [was "plugin(s)"]
I fail to grasp your intended implications, care to explain them? The whole point of AdNauseum is to confuse ad companies by providing fake interest data via ad clicks. If you block the ads or don't click on the ads, ad companies can't construct an accurate profile without some form of browser fing...

Re: Winsnap - Screen capture utility
I updated that entry, but instead of linking to the alternative codecpack.co site like we are now, we might want to mirror the app on TPFC servers instead.

Re: Best Firefox add-ons [was "plugin(s)"]
AdNauseum sounds like a terrible idea. I wouldn't want to reward sites by having it auto-clicking on any ads it encounters. If you block ads to begin with, how can ad companies construct a profile? Even the Lifehacker author couldn't get AdNauseum to work properly: I confess, I couldn’t get AdNauseu...

Re: Recommended standard Windows/Office tweaks
Great post, webfork!
It should be noted that Windows Sandbox requires the Pro Edition. Those with Windows Home will not be able to use it.

Re: Telegram - cross platform, secure chat
Just a FYI to make sure you login every once in awhile to prevent Telegram from deleting your account and having to register a new account all over again. I didn't know that Telegram removes inactive accounts. I believe the default inactive period is six months, but you can change this to a maximum ...

Re: jPortable
Had to run Java Portable from a command prompt, so was trying to figure out the easiest way to do this.
Found out you can use PA's Command Prompt Portable and that will auto-detect jPortable, so you can use that if you need to pass any command-line arguments to a .jar file or what have you.

Re: PDF-XChange Viewer
I wanted to try the OCR addon for PDF-Xchange Viewer from portableapps.com since the one from the official website doesn't seem to work properly (or maybe something has changed that needs to be documented). However, the link for the OCR addon on portableapps.com is dead. @JohnTHaller - Can you fix t...

Re: qBittorrent
I've updated the listing to add a note about removing qbittorrent.pdb. This is a ~100MB file that is part of the installer and is only used for crash reporting, so it is safe to be deleted.
I've also updated the filesize to use the 64-bit version.
