Advanced Onion Router v0.3.1.3 Updated

billon on 15 May 2017
  • 10MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 14 May 2017
  • Suggested by Vector

Advanced Onion Router is designed to bypass various barriers with a secure, anonymous Internet connection. The program attempts to circumvent firewalls, website censorship, web tracking tools, and more. Allows user of almost any application that connects to the Internet. Unlike similar clients that require a configurable proxy, AOR is able to "force" a program to use the Tor network.

Note that the Tor site recommends against using the service for Torrent connections.

Note: Instructions for making Tor editions of Opera, Firefox, and Chat are included in the "Help" directory.

Category:
System Requirements: WinAll / Wine
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
License: Various Open Source
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch AdvOR.exe.

Optionally, go to the "System" menu in options and check "Try to write to disk less frequently". This is ideal for increasing the life of drives running from flash memory.

  • When a client uses an unrecognized Socks5 login, the request will be allowed; however, a warning will be shown that contains the username and the password to allow users to find bad configuration settings (this solves the problem with replacing Tor with AdvOR in the Tor Browser Bundle).
  • The files Help\Firefox\readme.txt and Help\Firefox\AdvOR.ini were updated to work with the 6.5.2 version of Tor Browser.
  • Updated language strings: 3262, 3263.

I've tested out several programs and this is still my program of choice for the Tor network. Very lucky to have it.

@DarkShadow: v3.4.5 build 41712 seems to be the latest stable version.

As I wrote on 2015-09-26, the original software isn't portable. I don't know why it hasn't yet been blacklisted from this website... Anyway, I tried the PortableApps version, but initially it didn't work: I had to rename first uTorrent_Downloaded.exe to uTorrent.exe in the [\uTorrentPortable\App\uTorrent] folder.

@stisev: I really don't think feature bounties like what the qBitTorrent dev requested are harmful. As open source / freeware developers rarely see donations, I'd rather see requests like these than adware/bundleware.

stisev on 2017-01-03 10:32

Such garbage software. The author is about the biggest asshole I have ever met in the development world. Seriously, if you think this is an opinion go read the issues forum. as ransom for portable mode, he's demanding people give him money. You really can't make this shit up.

I gave qbittorrent an honest try. I can't get magnet links to associate with the portable version anymore. I even tried running it in Sandboxie and manually installing a reg entry.

This app should be reported and removed from PF as it constantly spreads its files all over my computer after magnet links are associated.
IT. IS. NOT. PORTABLE. and based on what the way the dev is screaming at its users, it's becoming donation-ware.

I encourage you all to petition mods to remove this app.

Tixati is not "72MB (uncompressed)"- it is either 38 MB (x32) or 36 MB (x64).

@billon

Thanks for your quietly updating Tixati's main entry, following the above agitation...;-)

  • "Uncompressed size": revised total footprint of relevant Win PE binaries
  • "How-to-extract": added pertinent advice to discard irrelevant Unix binaries

@smaragdus
(Tixati is not "72MB (uncompressed)"- it is either 38 MB (x32) or 36 MB (x64).)

Quite so, strictly speaking...

BUT...

Currently, the "Uncompressed size" field is formally defined in the entry form as:
"Total size of application files when fully unarchived/uncompressed".

We don't really want to open a whole 'nother can of worms about what exactly ought to be the appropriate scope of the "uncompressed size" field definition, with implication for every current entry in the Data Base, do we ?

...;-)
