ReNamer is a small and flexible file renaming tool that offers all the standard renaming procedures, including prefixes, suffixes, replacements, case changes. What a weird random drive-by necro comment... Anyways, I still use v5.71 of this program, it works better/faster/and with less DPI issues then the newer ones surprisingly, and contains much less bloated, like mp3 meta data now... really? |
Advanced Renamer can rename multiple files or folders using several different methods for calculating the new name, including metadata tools for sound and picture files (e.g. GPS data or ID3 tags) or other sources. Supports unicode, regular expressions, custom javascript and more.

Why bother with an inflated 25 MB "advanced" tool with muddy licensing terms |
Ant Renamer provides many options for the batch renaming of files and folders. The program includes the ability to change file extension, replace/insert/move strings, change case, even give files random names. The program can even rename based on date and time (great for scanned files) or using exif/mp3 tag info (making metadata the file name), or regular expressions. File renaming can be previewed before execution and changes can be added to a batch file and saved for future use.
Alternatively, Ant Renamer Portable (PortableApps.com Format, adjust drive letters and paths as you move PCs).

There is no way to rename using multiple methods/rules at the same time. You have to use one method at a time. Also, can't preview all the files and can't undo after closing the software. So, I prefer Advanced Renamer. |
Solid Renamer is a small file renamer that uses multiple rules to modify files, as well as preview the results. Rule changes include modifying prefixes, suffixes, clipping, insertions, replacements, enumerations and case changes, and rule sets can be rearranged, loaded, and saved.

I don't know whether it is solid, but it is not portable, I extracted the x64 bit installer ('solid_renamer-120-x64.exe', version 1.2.0.5) and it stored its settings in C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Roaming\Bitdreamers\Solid Renamer. I cut the config folder and put it in program's folder but the next time I ran it, this renamer re-created its config folder in AppData. The previous version (1.1.1) may not be that solid but at least is portable. |
Oscar's File Renamer is a unique file renaming tool with an integrated text editor and macro support. You can perform custom editing of filenames using the integrated text editor, then apply all the changes in one operation.
Note: Newer versions of the program are shareware; linking to old version.

Writes settings to: | Windows registry. But it writes a small number of non-critical settings (window position, last path accessed, last sort direction), so I am accepting it as portable. |

Problems? This process requires an up-to-date component (Innounp 0.36 or above) for Universal Extractor. If you have difficulty extracting the files, follow the steps below and retry:

Brilliant little program, exactly what I need! Same as the authour, me too I was fed up renaming hundreds and hundreds of files using the Windows F2 key. I was thinking about writing a similar program, but luckily I looked on this website first for existing programs and samed myself a lot of time developing the thing myself. This one definately stays on my toolbox-USB-stick! Many thanks to the author.

I tried to use latest zip (8.4), could not do anything. There was no option to add rules. May be something is wrong with the UI or it does not support Windows 8.1 N version. |

XnView is not Windows XP compatible anymore. In order to make it work with XP, replace libwebp.dll (plugin folder) with with webp.dll (xnview.com/download/plugins/webp.zip).

Although I've moved over to freeware options for most things I do, I've maintained use of Microsoft Photo Manager for years when working on my own photo collection. Today however, I was on a machine without it so I got PhotoScape up and found I actually prefer it.

Every few months I discover something new and cool with this program. Animated GIF tricks, photo edit functions, framing tricks, and photo collages. Today it was dragging and dropping an image onto the program icon and seeing the wealth of edition, annotation, and symbol tools available. |
