@smaragdus: You will note that the SourceForge page is now listed as being owned by 'sf-editor1'. That is one of the SourceForge staff accounts. What that means for CDex is detailed here in this Ars article:

tl;dr: SourceForge decided that the project page was abandoned, took it over and bundled the installer with ads, as they have done for a number of other well known projects.

The link on this page still points to CDExPortable_1.7.8.paf.exe, not to version 1.8.1. has the updated link.

@AndTheWolf: Good catch - I'm just using the PA home for both the website and download links.

How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch resonic.exe.
What's new? New features:
  • Pro: Playback and metadata support for RF64 Wave files (MBWF, BWF Wave, Broadcast Wave).
RF64 Wave files are RIFF Wave files (both are .wav) that can go past the 2GB
file size limit, but cannot be read by legacy players.
These files are typically created by modern applications that need to be able
to create very large files, e.g. Steinberg Cubase automatically creates RF64/MBWF
.wav files on export if the file size exceeds 2GB.
  • Pro: Now reads and plays BWF Wave files with .bwf extensions.
  • Pro: Project, Scene, Take, and Tape columns that correspond with
iXML metadata embedded in audio files. (#1187)
  • Pro: Heavily improved support for Soundminer metadata embedded in
    WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files.
  • Resonic now supports WavPack hybrid correction files (.wvc).
In hybrid compression mode WavPack creates pairs of .wv/.wvc files,
and while the resulting .wv file is lossy the accompanying (but optional) .wvc file
can be used to complete missing information for lossless playback.
Resonic will look for a .wvc file in the .wv file's path.
Thanks to the author of WavPack, David Bryant, for pointing this out!
  • Auto-closing popup menus now also fade out.
  • Browser now automatically expands collapsed folders after a short delay
    when dragging something onto them.
  • Browser now automatically scrolls while dragging something into it.
  • Pro: Create temporary slices from slice metas,
i.e. from slices stored in the metadata of certain filetypes, when available.
  • When using WASAPI as output device (recommended) and the active device is disconnected
or disabled Resonic will first shut down playback and then the device itself,
    and finally show a warning.
  • A transparent overlay is now shown between main window and dialogs (e.g. preferences)
and message or input boxes to focus the attention.
This feature can be disabled via 'Menu | Interface'.

  • Bigger and more readable fonts for waveform playback position (orange),
and waveform/analyzer/spectrum/level meter mouse position (blue). (#1165)
  • Pro: Showing detailed timecode while making selections (SHIFT),
and when snapped to markers, slices, or the loop start/end positions.
  • Flac decoder updated to libFlac 1.3.2, fixed previous release's issues.
  • Popup menu fixes and usability improvements.
  • Drag & drop improvements.
  • Pro: Raised level meter channel limit to 64. (#1173)
  • Much faster loading of large MIDI files (e.g. 'Black MIDI')
  • Pro: Reading additional meta data for several formats, e.g. tempo column (bpm)
is now calculated based on other available information if possible.
  • Waveform drawing improvements for multichannel files.
  • Pro: Bigger asynchronous file read buffer, worth the little extra memory use.
  • Recently changed created/accessed/modified dates now show up more descriptively
    as 'Today' and 'Yesterday'. (#1182)
  • Browser is updated faster when creating new folders.

  • Fixed track advance not working with DirectSound (DS) output devices.

  • Fixed broken file list column order in certain situations.
  • Fixed file list issues when deleting files.
  • Maximized main window was not being restored when exited in minimized state.

It's highly subjective (see subbject of psychoacoustics) but there are objective measures that can be taken to achieve it. I still remember when the PC platform was absolutely lousy soundwise -- it has now come a long way and in terms of digital audio it is bit perfect, if you choose the right tools. EAC or CueTools for ripping and a player like foobar2000 or XMPlay (or Resonic, for that matter) for playback are sound (pun intended) starting points...

two on 2017-03-17 14:22

Just realized new version supports dsd in wavpack: "Support for high-resolution DSD audio files compressed with WavPack, i.e. compressed DSF/DFF in .wv files. Note that while DSD-in-WV saves quite a bit of space (in our tests 35-50%) it also takes a bit longer to decode (e.g. to prepare the waveform.)"

@two who are you to call @Realist a troll ? WTF seems a person that flames is a troll, IMHO he was just giving his take on the software review, which I happen to agree with, so am I also a "TROLL"? Sound=music is a very subjective matter which I have heard being discussed since the "4 track" days, as the saying goes one mans junk is another mans gold... at least that's the saying. Try and lighten up on the name calling as it serves no useful purpose here.

FileOptimizer v9.80 Updated

SYSTEM on 15 Apr 2017
  • 194MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 15 Apr 2017
  • Suggested by I am Baas

FileOptimizer is a broad format file compression tool used to reduce file size without changing the quality, known as "lossless." This is done via wide variety of optimization and recompression tools and techniques. Original files are sent to the recycle bin for restoration in the event the uncompressed version is preferred. A long list of supported formats include audio/video (MP3, OGG, M4A), image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), office formats (DOCX, XLSX, ODT, PDF), and system files (DLL, EXE).

Supports drag-and-drop of files into the window or onto the program icon. Note that by default the program removes metadata for many file types. This information reduces overall file size and protects privacy but is important to some users (e.g. photographers) and file search tools.

A 64-bit version is available within the folder, the author reports the program is functional in WINE, and can be used on the command line.

System Requirements: Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10 / Wine
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
License: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL)
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch FileOptimizer32.exe (for 32-bit OS) or FileOptimizer64.exe (for 64-bit OS).

Optionally, to save space:
  • 32-bit systems: delete FileOptimizer64.exe and the \Plugins64 folder
  • 64-bit systems: delete FileOptimizer32.exe and the \Plugins32 folder
Similar/alternative apps: ArcThemALL!, PngOptimizer, RIOT
What's new?
  • Ribbon interface is removed as adviced in FileOptimizer 9.00.
  • Added detection 7-ZIP SFX archives, since as other SFX data overlay gets stripped after optimization (FatBit).

Can't start the app on WindowsXP - it misses BORLNDMM.DLL. Just plain adding of that .DLL doesn't resolve the issue...((
Any ideas for the solution?

Midas on 2015-12-27 03:05

@kozak: did you try registering that DLL with Windows?
(e.g., "regsvr32 BORLNDMM.DLL" at the command line)

Most images and files I post to portablefreeware go through this amazing compression tool. When compressing PDF files, I strongly recommend enabling the lossy DPI compression settings (usually around 150 or 200 is fine for most documents).
