sdare, reboots: agreed. Updated link to point to the actual program entry rather than the blog.

AdrianK_IT on 2011-12-05 20:11

This looks like a potentially useful app, but I'd never trust a 'removal tool' that didn't allow a 'scan and report' option first. You have no idea what this is going to do to a PC when you press the 'Start' Button!

guinness on 2011-12-05 22:33

Maybe you could request this as a new feature.

PortableApps.com AppCompactor v3.7

Andrew Lee on 27 Jun 2022
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 20 Jun 2022
  • Suggested by Checker

PortableApps.com AppCompactor allows you to compress whole directories including applications, file libraries and zip files. The program is a powerful compression tool that unites 7-Zip and UPX inside a user-friendly wizard. For applications, this saves disk space and increases performance when running from a slow media (like flash drives). For archives, this will recompress DLL, EXE, ZIP, JAR, IRC, PYD and BIN files to their maximum compression settings, as well as an option to decompress an app's binary files that were previously compressed with UPX.

All files are tested using UPX's test feature after compressing. Files smaller than 4K are automatically skipped as compressing will not save space on the drive. The standard Microsoft Visual C runtimes are skipped to prevent antivirus false-positives. Advanced configuration can be done with apps in PortableApps.com Format.

Note: As UPX will alter the EXEs and DLLs (reversible using the Decompress option in the AppCompactor) and some apps may have issues with Zip or Jar files compressed further, users should backup software and test it after processing.

tommyD: Disadvantages are that it breaks some programs, and it may be slightly more CPU-intensive to decompress libraries and executables on the fly.

YUMI v2.0.9.4

webfork on 5 May 2022
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 30 Jan 2022
  • Suggested by webfork

YUMI (Your Universal Multiboot Installer) can be used to create a multi-boot USB flash drive containing multiple operating systems, antivirus utilities, disc cloning, diagnostic tools and more. Aside from a few distributions, all files are stored within the Multiboot folder, making for a nicely organized Multiboot Drive that can still be used for other storage purposes. YUMI uses syslinux to boot extracted distributions stored on the USB device and reverts to using grub to Boot Multiple ISO files from USB, if necessary.

YUMI works much like Universal USB Installer, except it can be used to install more than one distribution to run from your USB. Distributions can also be uninstalled.

Stealth: ? Yes

How to extract: Download YUMI-X.X.X.X.exe to a folder of your choice and launch.

Bytessence DuplicateFinder v1.3.0

webfork on 15 Jun 2015
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Oct 2011
  • Suggested by Wolfghost

Bytessence DuplicateFinder (BDF) detects all the cloned files that you might have on your computer. These files, in addition to taking up valuable space, can increase antivirus scan time, slow defragmentation and searches, and make it more difficult to organize your files.

The program employs optimized detection system and file filters to reduce scanning time. Detected files can be removed in no time with the help of the automatic file selector and the predefined set of actions (copying, moving or recycling).

Hello! I am the developer behind BDF. I just released a new version of the program (1.3) which fixes some annoying bugs.

If you can reproduce the crash, please enable logging from the Settings dialog. The error handler should catch the exception and will write it in the log. You can send the log to the support e-mail and I'll try to fix the problem. Thanks and don't hesitate to contact me if you find bugs.

Clam Sentinel v1.22

lwc on 25 Mar 2023
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 23 Nov 2014
  • Suggested by jonezrin

Clam Sentinel is a real-time malware scanner using ClamWin Antivirus as its engine. The program also has its own system monitor that scans for unknown malware that does not yet have a ClamWin signature. It also detects new drives and monitors these units until the program is closed or until the device is disconnected.

NOTE: There have been no updates to this program since late 2014. You might want to consider using the general purpose Directory Monitor instead (see Execute scripts/applications when events occur, which also provides Clam Sentinel's missing feature of only launching ClamWin within specific folders).

Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: ClamWin Antivirus - You must have this program before using Clam Sentinel.

How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice Follow the configuration instructions on this page

Thanks for the info, MKonar. I see you carried it over to the ClamWin Portable entry, too. :)

Unfortunately, seems that afterall ClamWinDBUpdate is not adequate for a Sentinel configuration.

I tested it and even after correcting the "clampath=" key inside 'ClamWinPortableDBUpdate.ini', it doesn't work because my executable is 'ClamWin.exe' and not 'ClamWinPortable.exe'; also, it's located in a folder named 'bin', while the \/irus Database files are in a sibling folder named 'db'.

And just FYI, the 'thumbs.db' inside 'rsc' cause Explorer to complain when moving the extracted folder tree as instructed...

ishldgetoutmore on 2015-07-23 14:01

When I decompress Clam Sentinel, I don't see any .ini file. What am I missing?

ishldgetoutmore on 2015-07-23 14:16

Nevermind. I ran ClamSentinel.exe and it created the .ini file for me.

Isn't creating an installer counter-productive to portable freeware?

SYSTEM on 2011-05-09 08:06

@SYN: Well, AntiVir isn't portable anyway. :( If you want to begin using AntiVir, you have to either use the official installer or create a customized one by using this app.

I personally am creating a customized Windows 7 install disc that will install not only Windows but also some non-portable applications such as Avira AntiVir.

That's where ASC comes into play. When I launch the customized installer with the -y command line switch, the installer just installs the program without asking any questions. That's called an unattended install.

Similarly, I've found ways to install unattendedly almost all applications I'm willing to install. As a result, I don't need to watch my computer when the programs are being installed. :)

No longer exists! Go ahead and click the link, if you do it takes you to the site, you can download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, which contains the Rogue Remover, however, is not portable to the best of my knowledge.

.. Version 1.24 is still available from http://tinyurl.com/brrgfs (shortcut to the relevant SnapFiles page; file is actually hosted at the original publisher's site)

fpelletier on 2009-11-24 18:39

Nope...this is no longer available at majorgeeks or tinyurl. What's more, with something like an antivirus or antispyware, putting your faith in an old version is worse than not having any tool and still being wary. The ostensible successor is Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware product which is not stealthy...albeit it does work very well.
