Mozilla Thunderbird is a skinnable, feature-rich email, calendar, task and instant messaging client with support for plugins and many protocols. It comes with advanced search tools, message filtering, Bayesian spam detector, built-in spell checker, mailbox compression and many more. Program features can be extended with add-ons, including a specialized version of email encryption tool GPG.
Email protocols include SMTP, POP3, IMAP (including uploads, albeit a date issue), NNTP and RSS and chat support for IRC, Twitter, XMPP, Google Talk, and Matrix. Also supports OAuth for use with accounts that require it instead of a password.
Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition is a special build licensed by Mozilla. Alternatively, X-Thunderbird is also available. For XP/Vista, version 52.9.1 is available here.

LWBlat is a utility email sender using SMTP or NNTP for posting to newsgroups with a friendly interface. The program is a front-end for the Blat console utility. Also, as modern public SMTP servers require SSL and OAuth which Blat doesn't support, this utility includes a simulator mode (embedded LWServer) to test various settings and see how a message would have been received had it used them.
Alternatively, LWBlat GUI Portable is in PortableApps.com Format and automatically adjusts paths and Blat's own registry settings (if used).

Scribe is an email client with an integrated contact database and calendar, supporting SMTP, POP3 and IMAP (including uploads). Security features include Bayesian spam filter, HTML controls and attachment protection.
Note it no longer directly supports Gmail though, due to its unverified OAuth, but it should be available with a regular login Gmail via App Password+2FA.
Cross-platform with clients available for Mac and Linux.

@Falaffel: I'm not an i.Scribe user so you probably want to try contacting support about that. Failing that, you might try listing something in our troubleshooting forums to see if someone has run into a similar issue. |
POP Peeper is an email notifier that alerts you when you have new email on any of your accounts (IMAP [including uploads for paying users], POP3 and Webmail, but also RSS with a commercial plugin). You can also send emails using SMTP or through Webmail directly from POP Peeper.
Note: it includes OAuth support for accounts that require or prefer it instead of username/password, but Gmail isn't included. Since Google required money for it, Gmail's OAuth support was removed at late April 2025. Since Gmail removed direct login support during 2022, it means one must enable App Passwords+2FA in order to use this program with Gmail.
To enable secure connections, see forum instructions.

The website says this is compatible only up to XP, the README file says it's compatible up to Vista. When I tried it on my Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit computer, it didn't display any of my hard drives in the main window and only two hard drives under the partition tab. It's probably not 64-bit compatible. FreeOffice is a fast and lightweight office suite with word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation tools. The interface supports themes, a dark mode, and classic or ribbon-style toolbars. All components include a wide variety of formatting, functions, and animation.
The program will import and export to standard Microsoft formats with reasonable fidelity. A forum post about the previous 2006 version can be found here.
NOTE: The program will eventually require email registration, but a workaround is available.

@Emka: Inconvenient, but one workaround is to download and create a portable version of the latest version, then copy the settings over from the old instance. |
