Great! It works like a charm!

I was searching for programs to extract corrupted .dbx files, and I only found commercial ones.

NWL format mentioned in synopsis?

DocFetcher v1.1.25

Andrew Lee on 30 May 2021
  • 82MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 25 May 2021
  • Suggested by vixay

DocFetcher indexes your computer, making the contents of a wide variety of files instantly searchable. Selecting a search result shows a preview of the file with text highlighted and without formatting. You can filter results by location, file type, minimum and/or maximum filesize and more. The program can index Microsoft Office, OpenOffice/LibreOffice, PDF, RTF, EPUB, HTML and more formats from drives, external volumes, archive files and Outlook .PST files (some .OST files also work).

The program supports complex searches via wildcards, proximity, ranges, "fuzzy" terms, and more using Lucene search. You can also do standard file name search via "filename:searchterm." The program is cross-platform and functional on OS X and Linux, as well as 64-bit Windows.

Note:

  • The program requires that you manually add folders/drives that you want to view before searching. See the "Basic Usage" section of the homepage for a few intro steps. When adding to the search scope, make sure to check "Store relative paths if possible"
  • Some issues have appeared with the program on Windows 10. Users may wish to test the PortableApps beta version if you have issues.

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: Java Runtime Environment 1.7 or higher, see forum for use with Java Portable.
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: Eclipse Public License
How to extract: Download the "portable" ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch DocFetcher.exe.

If you see a memory error (very rare): either reduce the size/number of files indexed or do the following (64-bit Java only):
  1. Delete DocFetcher.exe from the main folder
  2. From the \misc folder, copy DocFetcher-8192_64-bit-Java.exe to the root folder and rename it to DocFetcher.exe

@ smaragdus: Thanks ... and updated ;)

Tremendous search program that has saved me again and again, finding files and content that other programs miss. Each version seems to add to the pile of file formats it can index. As a result, it's on every machine I own and some I don't.

MoisheP on 2018-06-17 01:13

DocFetcher indexes many formats, such as LibreOffice documents, that Microsoft Search (aka Cortana) does not, or does incompletely. It also uses far less CPU time, once the initial indexing is completed, than MS. DocFetcher also runs on Linux. Results can be sorted by likelihood of match, as well as filename, type, date etc. Only downside is that it requires Java.

All programs that claim to do password auditing should work this way. Admins don't need to know the actual password, just if its complex enough.

Mixture on 2019-04-03 09:55

@webfork, any software that can find out about how many numbers, upper case letters, lower case letters, symbols, punctuation characters, and length of a password, like Password Security Scanner, could be exploited to reveal the actual password itself. These kind of programs are very dangerous in that respect. That's why I'll never use Password Security Scanner.

Midas on 2019-04-04 07:35

@Mixture: bear in mind no system is ever 100% secure. Given enough resources, time and/or cunning a savvy hacker can get all your digital secrets. Your best bet is common sense, unrelenting vigilance and the help of stuff like the database at https://haveibeenpwned.com/ ...

Optionally, to save each note as an individual text file (the default database file is not easily readable by other programs), create a folder (e.g. Notes) and enter the name of that directory into the File Directory blank under the Storage tab (relative pathways like ..\Notes work fine). Existing notes in this folder will be automatically added.

Wow -- you don't need this tool until you NEED it. Acrobat 9/10 is continually reinstalling itself into MS Office and causing problems (and doing nothing of value). Before I repeatedly went through multiple menus inside Office to disable them all, which is horribly tedious. Now I shut them off en masse with this. Awesome.

Tested on Win7x64 w/ Office 2010.

The license leaves room for interpretation.
The author clarifies in the FAQ:
** Quote **
Q: The license of your software says that I only allowed to use it for personal and non-commercial use. What does it mean ? Can I use it in my work environment ?
A: When I say that my software is for "non-commercial use", I mean that you are not allowed to make profit from my software. You are allowed to freely use my software in your work environment for serving the internal needs of the company or for your own personal use. You can also offer my software to your customers, as long as you don't charge your customers for using my software, and as long as your customers know that my software is freeware and available to download from NirSoft Web site. Government agencies are also allowed to use my software without restrictions.

However, you are not allowed to:
* Include my software as a part of commercial software package.
* Charge your customer for a service provided by using my software. For example: You are not allowed to recover the password of your customer by using my password-recovery tools, and then charge your customer for password-recovery service.
** End quote **

Condensed:
It is freeware for private use AND use in a business environment, but it's not allowed to make profit out of it.
