WinContig v3.0.0.1 Updated

billon on 22 Oct 2020
  • 4MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 22 Oct 2020
  • Suggested by MarcoNovaro

WinContig is an easy-to-use file defragmentation program that allows defrag of parts of the drive. This is useful for squeezing extra performance out of important or frequently used files or programs without wasting time and energy cleaning up the rest of the drive.

Note that this is recommended only on magnetic disks. Flash-based drives (SSDs and thumb drives) don't benefit from defragmentation and such maintenance tools can reduce the life of the drive.

The program engine is based on the standard Microsoft defragmentation API and allows you to group files into profiles, accepting a number of available command-line switches for additional control.

OK, I ran a newer version on my XP SP3 system and it worked just fine. Thanks for a nice easy defrag program with some nice display information and command line features. I actually like how the pre-version 1 versions looked better (less cluttered), but at least this works and doesn't crash and is portable and simple.

Sysinternals' lean Contig.exe v1.8 (248KB) CLI will defrag selected files just as well…;-)
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/contig

Bonus point: still behaves under WinXP...;-)

Although a little difficult to figure out, have successfully used this to defragment fragmented .ISO files resulting from an AnyBurn .IMG file conversion.

Some recent plugins for IrfanView 4.54-32bit no longer work under XP,
specifically WebP.dll 4.54-32bit...:-(

IrfanView's developer Irfan Skiljan kindly suggested a workaround for the broken webP.dll Plugin under Win XP :

https://www.irfanview.info/files/iview453_plugins.zip

IrfanView 4.54
+ webP.dll 4.51 Plugin (Link date 20/02/2018; Size 204,288 bytes)
+ Win XP
= eternal bliss...;-)

Many plugins were also updated in this version, so IrfanView recommends updating them if you update IrfanView itself.

Version 4.5.2 available.

smaragdus on 2015-09-05 03:36

I needed to connect to an onion site and downloaded the latest version (5.0.2) but Australis makes Tor Browser absolutely terrible and unusable- I do not want to install heaps of add-ons just to restore features the Mozilla idiots removed. I had an earlier version of Tor Browser (3.6.0- before the advent of the abominable Australis) but the perpetual blinking of the Tor button urging for update is unbearable and cannot be disabled. It can be removed from the tool-bar but this way one cannot acquire new identities.

rbon on 2018-09-22 16:46

Starting from version 8.0 Tor project builds both version of TorBrowser: 32 bit and 64 bit.
- TorBrowser page: https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html
- TorBrowser repository: https://dist.torproject.org/torbrowser/8.0.1/
So You can add on description the link for download 64 bit version 'torbrowser-install-win64-8.0.1_en-US.exe'

@billon
Thanks for updating "How to extract".

Having used it for many years, Filezilla has lost its way now in my opinion. The irritating pop up balloon on every successful upload is just one of the annoyances. The latest update seemed to corrupt something on my Windows and I was reduced to about one fifteenth of the normal upload speed. Going back to an ancient version hasn't fixed the issue and the portable versions are the same. However WinSCP works fine so it's that for me from now on.
