TreeLine is a unique cross between an outliner and a database. It stores information in a tree structure, but each node in the tree functions like a mini database with its own data types and field formats. It supports a wide variety of import/export options, one of the most useful being for Mozilla-type bookmarks.
Note: This program is not a typical tree-based outliner and requires some effort to read and digest in order to grasp the the program's data model and associated concepts. See the How to Use section of the website.

Treeline can now import plain text, delimited text, Treepad text, bookmarks (both HTML & XBEL formats), generic XML, and Open Document (ODF) files; export options include delimited text, HTML, generic XML, XSLT, and ODF. Hard to beat in one of the weaker aspects for this type of programs... The only downside up to now seems to be the sizable memory footprint (see this for a comparison between an a freshly started Treelines with an empty database and sibling Python based wikidPad bearing 302 pages, which BTW feels somewhat sluggish, both in portable installations: http://i54.tinypic.com/2mflnnt.png )

The version I downloaded "AM-Notebook 5.0.1" dated "08-Apr-2008" allows for the installation of the lite version on a USB-Stick ...nice app but I'll stick with TreeDBNotes Pro (http://www.mytreedb.com/) since I already paid for it ...AM-Note need the spell-checker loaded on the local machine ..which isn't cool with me (-;

I've been using version 4.13 for awhile. Love the program. It got even better w/ v5.01. Added Contacts, Calendar, and ToDo list to the notes. Don't need to Extract as it have an option to install portably on a thumbdrive (although no options to choose a folder).

AM is good, but others you might want to try are Keynote and Totaltext. Both have more features, are portable, and freeware. |
TreeSheets is a mashup of many different program types including spreadsheets, mind mappers, outliners, PIMs, text editors and small databases. It has a tabbed interface and is lightweight and fast, using few system resources even with large files.
It's like a spreadsheet, but much more suitable for complex data because it's hierarchical. It's like a mind mapper, but more organized and compact. It's like an outliner, but in more than one dimension. It's like a text editor, but with structure. It is capable of many kinds of data organization, including todo lists, calendars, project management, brainstorming, organizing ideas, planning, requirements gathering, presentation of information, etc.
Functional in 64-bit and cross platform (Linux and Mac).

It doesn't even run and hangs if you don't allow it to connect to the Internet (at least the first time). Tried three times and dumped it for good after about one minute. |
