Is it stealth?

ripu on 2018-03-11 11:19

What are its advantages over Notepad2?

webfork on 2018-03-15 21:09

ripu: it has encryption+master password, more encoding options, more visual customizations, and lots of small updates/fixes. I haven't tested stealth status.

MetaPath v4.0.13

Checker on 24 Jun 2012

Metapath is designed to be a slim file browser, set to open every file with the same application (i.e. a text editor). You can, however, change this setting so that each file opens with its Windows default application, or you can right-click on a file to choose the set application. Simple file manager actions are provided (copy, move, create link, rename, delete, save as...) along with the ability to set a filter and sort by name, file-type, size, or date.

It integrates well with Notepad2 and it's possible to add a "Browse" button to the toolbar, which brings up Metapath (if stored in the same directory.)

The setting for the "target application" (the default application with which to open every file) takes a standard relative path, but the location settings for a "quick viewer" and the "Favorites" folder do not. For example, "\Apps\UniversalViewer\Viewer.exe", but not "..\UniversalViewer\Viewer.exe".

System Requirements: Win2K / WinXP / Vista
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
Path portability: Requires manual entry of relative path (eg. ..\..\personal\work.doc)
License: Freeware/Open Source
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch metapath.exe.
What's new?
  • Move window to default position (Ctrl+Shift+P)
  • Improved compatibility with Windows 7
  • Released x64 build of metapath.exe

This little utility does have some potential.
There are some problems though, things like it's not very portable, you can't enter 'relative' paths for things like the viewer, it needs to have a drive letter.
It doesn't show the file extensions.
If you want to use a text editor other than 'Notepad2', well, tough.
You don't seem to be able to select multiple files to copy or move.

I'll keep an eye on this, if it can be improved then i could use it.

I dropped Notepad++ in favor of this one. Notepad++ is rapidly turning into bloatware. Notepad2 does not need plugins for its features, and so it is faster and much more compact, while still full of useful features.

Someone mentioned AkelPad. Some of its plugins don't work too well, and the syntax highlighting of HTML files isn't nearly as good as that of Notepad2.

There's now a x64 build of Notepad2. But can someone please explain to me how to get the "Open shell links" feature, so strings like or will launch when clicked in Notepad2?

I've tried them all over the years, including the modded version, but keep coming back to Flo's original. Small; fast; no distractions. Other notepad replacements often have too many options. The only thing I would add is a tabbed interface, but it's not a deal-breaker. Using the built-in Favourites and coupled with Flo's own metapath (, it's almost perfect for the way I work.
