Haven't used Chrome for a while, so I thought I'd give this new version a try. Starts in the wink of an eye and loads pages instantly. Wants to import bookmarks from IE (or another "installed" browser, I guess,) so I still need to figure out how to import from an HTML file or my portable version of Firefox.

I'm a Firefox user but Chrome is a pretty darn good web browser. it put web-kit on the map and made other browser makers rethink their development strategies and streamlined a better interface. If anything I'd suggest using Chrome Beta - which actually pretty stable and has the latest changes.. Canary/Dev if you're the daring type :)

I wonder why the portable version from Cashy's Blog is not even mentioned here.

mrpink: apart from a mention from the nice folks at ghacks, there's no indication this has anything above the PA version. In fact, I couldn't find much on the site in the way of any details/information.

webfork: Cashy's version is closed source and illegally bundles Google Chrome without permission. Cashy isn't really big on permission or following trademark/copyright law.

Ghacks mentioned about this ages ago and as you know, this thing preexists PA version. I didn't say that it is superior or anything, but why it's not mentioned like for example the 4 different versions of Opera, all mentioned here.
And actually it does have something above the PA version, it's the on demand updater. You know there' s a new version out, you run it and it downloads it for you. Perfect for the beta versions that PA don't update frequently and even more perfect for those who use Chromium

mrpink: As far as I know, the other Opera versions are legal. I know that Opera@USB has permission to repackage Opera, for instance. Caschy, on the other hand, repackages Google Chrome as well as Firefox and other apps without permission, in violation of trademark licenses and EULAs. PFC doesn't list illegal software.

I wanted to move the browser cache to a fast RAM Disk to speedup surfing.
Use this command: D:\GoogleChromePortable\GoogleChromePortable.exe --disk-cache-dir="E:\Chrome Browser Cache"
It might be drive F: or G: or... on your computer :-)

I am going to stay away of Chrome because of this:

Second thought ! Hum maybe third thought!
I am not really comfortable with Google Chrome that possibly is spying on its users, but I am not comfortable either with the "Unchrome" utility as well:
- The size of unchrome (614K) is impressive for a simple utility that replaces a string with zeros
- I loaded unchrome in a disassembler (Ida Pro, free version): impressive again: it seems to do more than it says on the face of it!
- It is true that unchrome comes clean at virustotal.com, but that is not enough ...
My conclusion: if you do not use Chrome, you don't need unchrome either!

Sorry for my typo.
Last version before v40.0.2214.93 was v40.0.2214.91 (and not v40.0.2274.91)!

I don't think Chrome, portable or not, works on Windows XP any longer, I can never get it to work....

v45.0.2454.101

JohnTHaller 2015-09-29 05:23

Chrome still works on Windows XP (confirmed with 45.0.2454.101) but it will not work on an older processor lacking SSE2 support.

Tested on Windows 10 64bit:
After closing Chrome and the PortableApps.com platform 13.0 I found files in this folder:
C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data
AND in the registry I found settings in these keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Google\Chrome\PreReadFieldTrial
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Chrome

There was a Crashpad issue causing the APPDATA directory to be left behind that was fixed in today's releases. I can't reproduce the others on any OS. Please post a complete bug report in the support forum here: http://portableapps.com/forums/support/other_apps We have hundreds of apps and bug reports as comments on another site often won't be seen and won't wind up being addressed, at least not in a timely manner.

@JohnTHaller: Thank you for the new release. Regarding the registry entries that are left behind I will post in the forum.
