yED - diagramming program

#1 Post by webfork »

Synopsis wrote:yEd is a powerful desktop application that can be used to quickly and effectively generate high-quality diagrams. Create diagrams manually, or import your external data for analysis. Our automatic layout algorithms arrange even large data sets with just the press of a button.
yEd is freely available and runs on all major platforms: Windows, Unix/Linux, and Mac OS X. [Java-based]

I definitely like the usability and you can get started writing up a flowchart quick and easy.  The included "layout" toolset kicks Visio to the curb with some amazingly cool organization tricks.

Features:
https://www.yworks.com/en/products_yed_ ... tures.html

Testing setup:

1. Download as described here:

http://yed.yworks.com/support/qa/1134/c ... pplication

2. Unzip and run the .jar file

NOTE: I did not test it with PortableApps launcher, but I don't think that program prevents AppData writes so it's likely still not portable.

Status: not portable, writes settings to AppData\Roaming\yWorks

Other info:

License: Open source, but with a very weird license.  The portableapps link above goes into some detail here but this doesn't exactly inspire confidence.  There's a non-distribution clause that sucks (what if they go out of business?) and the most annoying part as there's a bizzare "survival" clause:

"The Licensee may terminate this Agreement at any time by destroying all copies of the Software in possession."

Thanks Midas. I did a retest with and have some promising results:

When run with jPortable + Java Launcher it writes to \JavaPortableLauncher\Data\AppData\yWorks. Excellent news.

This wasn't a full test so I acknowledge there may be other system settings but this is promising enough to push to the Submissions thread.

Old thread update: yEd 3.17.1 is out http://www.softpedia.com/progChangelog/ ... 23918.html ... hopefully sometime this year I'll get to dig into their GraphML format. Anything to get away from Visio.
