LibreOffice Portable v5.4.2 Updated

billon on 17 Oct 2017
  • 493MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 17 Oct 2017
  • Suggested by JohnTHaller

LibreOffice is a complete productivity suite including word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, database, drawing tool and more. Includes strong compatibility for 100s of file formats including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio etc.). The program is similar to OpenOffice, a program that it was derived from, but has added many new features and improvements.

LibreOffice Portable is a special build developed in conjunction with the publisher. A "Still" version that's more tested and stable but with fewer features/capabilities is available via the website link. On systems without Java installed, some functions such as document creation wizards and the Base database application etc. can be enabled by adding jPortable, though this is optional and can be skipped if those functions are not needed. Alternatively, X-LibreOffice is also available.

Cross platform with versions available for Mac, Linux/BSD (comes default with most distros) and supports a variety of extensions. A more stable "Still" version is available from the website link.

XP users: v.5.4.0 Rev 2 is the last supported version.

Confusing: "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable is required for this release, and is not installed by LibreOffice installer (except for Windows XP)" - from here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.4
The download page doesn't list this under system requirements...

Yeah that's not great.

Scroll down to Platform Compatibility - Windows and you'll see that it mentions the MS VC++ 2015 runtime is required and it needs to match the bitness of the version of LO used. If you're on a 64bit system might as well install both 32bit & 64bit.

Comepared to MS Office it't a bit of a dull knife. (For the average cook a dull knife does everything with a bit more effort.) OOO does everything you could possible need that MS office does (and a few very great things that MS office doesn't do, like editing PDF in the draw module). It only lacks some of the sharp WOW effects that MS office has. So if you want all functionality minus a few bells and whistles go for Open Office. If you think a a bit of eye candy and a slightly easier to use interface is worth several hundred $$ then shell out. I use the portable version at work because they use OOO 2.3 and the portable version gives me what I need.

The reason to choose this office suite over LibreOffice is stability; while it's missing a lot of features, compatibility, customization, and other improvements in LibreOffice, crashes are very unusual.  I keep both on my machine depending on my needs.

Came across this today: "OpenOffice, after years of neglect, could shut down" at http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/09/openoffice-after-years-of-neglect-could-shut-down/

"ofw08charity.exe" is free but needs registration at the website for the serial. follow instructions for the extract/install up to step #3. there is no need to edit .ini files because the string "OEMRegisterSkip" is not there.

keep the usb version.

The 2008 version is much lighter and faster than OOo. Wow! Looks great so far.

Testing version 2008, not sure if it is stealth, but seems rather snappy, looks like a keeper...

For those having trouble with installation instructions:

Install it to you desktop machine,
choose default interface language (which you may change later via options),
enter registration details (received freely at email address given while registering for download; also, keep those details, as they are mandatory for SoftMaker Office 2008 installation),
choose location for install (not really important, as you'll be making that install portable),
then choose the custom button on the next dialog for selecting which components of the suite to install (I recommend getting the interface language of your choice, plus all the proofing tools for the languages you understand and minus the SMASH launcher),
then deselect the 'Install application for all users on this computer' option on the next dialog and
proceed to Install.

After that, find the SoftMaker Office entry in the start menu, and under 'tools' you'll find the option to transfer the installation to your portable device, after which you can uninstall from your desktop machine if you wish to.

Really useful soft, as it's multiplatform (Windows & Linux) and can be run portable.
