WizTree v4.19 Updated

Special on 5 Mar 2024
  • 13MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 5 Mar 2024
  • Suggested by I am Baas

WizTree is a very fast disk space analyzer and search tool, scanning a single folder or your entire hard drive quickly and showing those files and folders using the most disk space. The program uses the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) feature in Windows to rapidly view files.

Note that this high-speed mode is limited to local, NTFS-formatted drives. The program must do a (much slower) scan of FAT-formatted or network drives for analysis.

Just downloaded the latest portable version, and it asks for admin permission. That is a no no for me.
Looking at the manifest it says: AsInvoker, so i'm not sure why it would ask.

olliebean on 2023-08-26 11:46

I don't know if this is the case in Windows 11, but in Windows 10 the new "Windows 11 style" UI seems noticeably laggier.

Special on 2023-08-26 14:44

Noticed the same thing here, I reverted back personally, and frankly this "change" is enough to keep me from updating to future versions. The dev is very good about these things though, so maybe he'll revert these changes back if he knew there were issues, he's somewhat active (I think) on these here forums.

If it ain't broke...

Belatedly noted JFS scores 9/60 on Vir*sTotal, mildly concerning results most probably imputable
to JFS *.exe being packed with ASPack compressor, which many vir*s checkers tend to frown upon.

No matter, JFS has been running forever with aplomb and without any apparent side effect on my overly oldie XP machine...;-)

Thanks Guido76. It's still labelled as 8.0.5 but it's a new version and working here too

Emka on 2017-03-04 13:44

It doesn't display some German special characters correctly (e.g. ß), and more importantly, it shows a "buy the pro version" nagscreen upon exit and opens the product homepage in the system's standard browser.

Guido76 on 2017-03-04 14:30

Emka, you're right. Some problems with the French language too. And a very annoying nag-screen, and automatic launch of the browser. Too bad!
I will try to see this with the author, but I suppose that is part of his strategy to force the sale of the Pro version, so there is only little chance to make him change his mind!

AutoCompress v1.4.1.23

Andrew Lee on 13 Jul 2023
  • 65KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 30 May 2014
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

AutoCompress intelligently compresses/decompresses drive content based on whether the compression will actually save space. For example, JPG and MP3 already have built-in compression, while text and spreadsheets frequently reduce to 50% or less of their original size. The program can also compress based on age or size, scanning all folders recursively under the provided folder (by default c:\).

The program can also disable compression based on the reverse criteria: since files that are already compressed take more processor power to decompress twice, this program can speed up your computer.

This program requires an NTFS-formatted drive.

I recommend using Everything (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1479) instead and organize results by date. This program runs a little faster than Everything's initial drive search and then sort, but solves the issue of not being able to resize the DriveSort the window, not being able to change the top files to 50 or 200, or the ability to update automatically with new file changes.

The three main issues I found with WinDirStat are:

1. It can't compare the current disk usage with an older snapshot in order to see what new files crept up, or which increased in size

2. It can't delete multiple files at once

3. Its development seems to have ceased in September 2007, according to https://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/
