CloneSpy v3.42 Updated

billon on 13 Oct 2018
  • 6MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 13 Oct 2018
  • Suggested by Fluffy

CloneSpy can help you free up hard drive space by detecting and removing duplicate files with exactly the same contents regardless of their name, date, time, or location. Also, CloneSpy is able to find files that are not exactly identical, but have the same file name. This can be an issue for example if you have different versions of a file and you want to find and remove the older versions. CloneSpy is able to find zero-byte files.

Note: The installer now allows you to choose between a 32 or 64-bit version of CloneSpy.

Category:
System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10

What's new?
  • Added:
    • Folders can now be scanned non-recursively, i.e., sub-folders can be ignored (see Pool frames of the Main window);
    • When moving files to a relative path, the path can now be resolved relative to a retained file (see Deletion page of the Options window);
    • Files with paths that are too long for CloneSpy to process can now be generally ignored (see Files page of the Options window).
  • Modified: The installer no longer requires administrator privileges for unpacking the portable version.
  • Fixed: Added an explanation for the formerly unknown error code 1392.

A lot of people here trying to delete multiples of the same image - I just wanted to give a shout out to Dup Detector, which is a great piece of software that does exactly that.

Dup Detector doesn't just do file-size/checksum analysis, it actually analyzes the images to find similarities. E.g. one could be black & white and the other can be color, or one can be watermarked, or one could be taken 2 seconds later because someone blinked & it'll find both and display them to you and ask which one you want to delete or if you want to keep both. You can choose how strict it is in its matching algorithm - 100% mach, 95% match etc.

You can even have it set up to automatically select which one to delete based on rules - e.g. the smaller one. Then you just approve the selection by hitting the space bar, or you can just let it do its thing automatically, or you can go full-manual mode and click the image you want to delete. Super fast way to delete duplicates and easy to use. I've used it professionally to manage large image catalogs that had a lot of duplicates of different sizes.

Unfortunately, it's not portable.

The latest version I have is 3.3.02 from July 8, 2011. You can get an earlier version from rareware.

Would be nice if it had an option to not search subfolders.

@kiwichick It does!

Absolutely excellent program that saved a ton of room on my hard drive, clearing out duplicates as well as several multiple-size images from an earlier effort to compress some really big photos. The best part is how it automatically sees two photos that are already very similar and helps you pick the better one to archive. There were only one or two false-positives in a batch of hundreds (a concert picture somehow got paired with a painting of Mozart).

Bytessence DuplicateFinder v1.3.0

webfork on 15 Jun 2015

  • Released on 7 Oct 2011
  • Suggested by Wolfghost

Bytessence DuplicateFinder (BDF) detects all the cloned files that you might have on your computer. These files, in addition to taking up valuable space, can increase antivirus scan time, slow defragmentation and searches, and make it more difficult to organize your files.

The program employs optimized detection system and file filters to reduce scanning time. Detected files can be removed in no time with the help of the automatic file selector and the predefined set of actions (copying, moving or recycling).

Hello! I am the developer behind BDF. I just released a new version of the program (1.3) which fixes some annoying bugs.

If you can reproduce the crash, please enable logging from the Settings dialog. The error handler should catch the exception and will write it in the log. You can send the log to the support e-mail and I'll try to fix the problem. Thanks and don't hesitate to contact me if you find bugs.

Might be my new favorite duplicate finding program on the site next to DoubleKiller http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=136 (and certainly much easier to use).

At least three places on their site, they call it freeware, including the phrase "Freeware for private and commercial use" (http://www.alldup.de/en_alldup.htm)
On the other hand AllSync, from the same company, is time-limited shareware--perhaps Lee got the two confused?

webfork on 2013-02-16 20:12

@Prime: Unknown. Anyway, just rechecked the status and the current license info is correct.

Simple Duplicate Finder v1.2.0.3

Midas on 5 Mar 2015

Simple Duplicate Finder helps track down similar files either to delete extras and save space or to compare versions. While most duplicate-searching programs are looking for exact copies, SDF uses a Percentage Search, allowing you to adjust the percentage difference required for a file to be considered a duplicate. Once scanned, the program will display the number of bytes which differ as well as the specific percentage match between files.

This is useful for example with metadata: when Windows Image Import tool downloads pictures from your digital camera, additional XML data is inserted into the images and video files, including a timestamp of when the image was downloaded to the computer. Although the image is identical in every way to its original, the file will appear as unique. SDF can detect these files and help remove them.
