DesktopOK v11.19 Updated

Andrew Lee on 8 Apr 2024
  • 674KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Apr 2024
  • Suggested by JohnW

DesktopOK contains a host of beneficial Windows interface tweaks. The program can save the current icon view by resolution and make it easy to swap between views, showing all saved view formats in a list. Other tools include basic screenshots, the ability to force-close programs, color tool, volume and more:

  • Interface tools include reducing clutter with a minimize-to-tray by right clicking on a window close button, mouse hiding and ability to hide desktop icons after a period of inactivity (click on the desktop to make them re-appear). You can even modify default icon spacing.

  • Window management tools include scrolling any window that your mouse hovers over (not just what's in focus) and alt+drag (for moving windows without having to hold your cursor over the top bar).

How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. In this folder, create an empty text file and name it DesktopOK.ini. Launch DesktopOK.exe or DesktopOK_x64.exe.

Possible issues:
  • The program is in German: If not automatically set to the English, click the by clicking the flag in the lower left corner of the window for any of 24 world languages.
  • It saves to AppData: If you don't create an empty text file, it writes to %APPDATA%/DesktopOK/DesktopOK.ini. If you accidentally skipped this step, you can simply move this file over to the application folder.

RBTray v4.14

Andrew Lee on 21 Mar 2022
  • 149KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 21 Mar 2022
  • Suggested by modussn

RBTray allows you to minimize application windows to the system tray by:

  • Right-Clicking its minimize button
  • Shift-Right-Clicking on its title bar
  • Using the Windows-Alt-Down hotkey
Note that not all all of these methods will work for every window, so please use whichever one works for your needs.

Restore a window by left clicking that window's tray icon, or by selecting 'Restore Window' from the tray icon's right-click menu.

Note: The program has no tray icon of its own. To exit the application, minimize a window, right-click the resulting tray icon and choose 'Exit RBTray'. Alternatively, run RBTray.exe with the "--exit" parameter.

So I am using RBTray, but it is not working on Firefox and Opera. Right Click does not minimize these browsers to tray.

PAFuser on 2021-09-19 10:09

Works fine on Firefox if Title Bar visible, if not use Shift-Right-Clicking on Tab Bar (mine in on top) or Windows-Alt-Down. Also works with Thunderbird. Do not use Opera, but one of the three methods in description seems to work on every program I use, so give it a try.

PAFuser on 2022-03-21 09:42

All 3 methods work on Firefox without Title Bar in 4.14 version. Great app.

ReIcon lets you save and restore your desktop layout. If you frequently change your screen resolution (e.g. to play games or use applications that require a specific resolution), you are probably familiar with the problem of your desktop icons being jumbled into a mess after you switch back to your normal resolution. ReIcon solves this problem by allowing you to save your desktop layout and restore it later with the click of a button (or with the right-click context menu).

I like it and think that it can be considered better than similar programs as it offers command-line options, which means one can make the saving of the current icon-layout a set-it-and-forget-it regular scheduled task in task-scheduler.
I'd vote for it but but I have zero rank.

@Orca My impression is that this program is more about the aesthetic. As the description states:

"... visually hide or un-hide only the taskbar ..."

And on the homepage:

"... you love a clean desktop and don’t want even a taskbar to mar your wallpaper ..."

The screenshot itself also merely shows off the interplay between the start button and wallpaper.

Ah am I missing something, what does this do different than auto hide taskbar setting? Yeah I no it leaves the start button but is that really so helpful more than auto hide? Maybe its just me and I ain't tryin to be a hater I'm jus sayin.

Gridy adds an invisible grid on your desktop so that any window you move or resize is snapped to it. This helps maximize screen real estate by making windows placed adjacent to each other dynamically adjust to avoid overlapping.

Snapping to the grid is enabled with mouse drag or keyboard arrow keys. Gridy also lets you store and restore a window's size and position in up to 9 slots. This is useful for quickly arranging your windows in a convenient way. In addition, you can hide the window's Alt-Tab icon, and set any window semi-transparent or to "Always on Top."

Why not simply use an AutoHotKey script?
Here is an example for setting WinKey + A to toggle always-on-top:

#a::
WinGet, currentWindow, ID, A
WinGet, ExStyle, ExStyle, ahk_id %currentWindow%
if (ExStyle & 0x8) ; 0x8 is WS_EX_TOPMOST.
Winset, AlwaysOnTop, off, ahk_id %currentWindow%
else
WinSet, AlwaysOnTop, on, ahk_id %currentWindow%
return

I believe if you look at the Stick-It! source code you will see that I use almost that exact code. But Stick-It! is nice and shiny, and has audio visual effects! Besides, most people do not use AutoHotkey and releasing it as a compiled exe greatly broadens the potential user base.

One odd note: the program won't hide Mozilla SeaMonkey when you hold the hot key and click the top bar: you have to click IN the window. Also, it won't hide YoutubeDownloaderHD at all. Other than those two programs, it seems uniform when hiding all other windows.

I went digging for this and got frustrated and pushed it back. I went back again today and same results. No idea how to get this one.

TP109: Thanks but I can't tell if that's the installer or the plain EXE because it's using brothersoft's weird downloader.

If the icon disappears (this *occasionally* happens when Explorer acts up in Win7x64) don't run Task Manager and End Task. Your hidden windows will not return. The trick is to RE-RUN Minime and, when prompted, click "OK".

I see that many people use this to declutter their desktop, but I like to use on my work computer when I'm plying my game and I don't want my boss to see it ;-)

This is one of the most useful tiny helpers EVER!! I love the tool, i strongly recommend it to everybody! I have spent months searching for something similar, and have even made an AutoHotkey-Script to help with clean windowpositioning, but finally, the quest is over ;)

Big Thanx!!

Taskix v1.5

Taskix lets you reorder buttons on the taskbar using drag-and-drop. Note that if "Group similar taskbar buttons" is set, you will be able to move a button inside the group or move the group as a whole, but not to move a button out of its group. If you open many windows so buttons end up stacked up on a single taskbar button, Taskix will also work inside the stacked button list.

Taskix seems to occasionally get windows confused for me. I've had a few windows which simply won't come to the top when I click on them - they stay behind the others. It's not necessarily taskix at fault (I have VirtuaWin running as well), but switching it off fixed the problem.

Kaleb on 2009-08-31 21:38

Uh... there are not any zip files to download.
So, how do I make it portable?

freakazoid on 2009-09-29 02:34

kaleb, the new version of Taskix uses the MSI install method.

v1.5 still exists on the Taskix server:
