Zback is a backup and synchronization tool with a small footprint. Copy modes include update files, refresh existing files, or mirror source to target and can be run manually, from batch/script, or from the command line. Users can filter files based on extension, size, date, subdirectories and preview their backup/sync before running.

Bvckup 2 is a backup/synchronization tool that uses "delta" copy methods, meaning it only transfers changes to a file or files rather than recopying the entire set. This is frequently faster, saves bandwidth for network backups and can help flash media live longer by reducing the overall number of disk writes. The program can do real-time, periodic or manual backups, and also functions as a file copier that can pause and resume both local and network transfers.
Note: this program is an unsupported beta, meaning that the author provides a commercial version of the program that includes support. A previous, freeware version with fewer features is available from bvckup.com.

SyncExp enables the synchronization of files and folders within a single PC or over the LAN. It uses an optimized file comparison algorithm that checks for the existence/time/date/size of files, with automatic activity log, progress report window and preview of action.
NOTE: Homepage is gone, linking to Archive.org.

USBFlashCopy backs up/synchronizes from external storage on the fly. The program runs in the background and copies all or select files from inserted media to a destination of your choice. Includes available copy throttle speed, minimum free space check to avoid filling up your drive, file filters, and can even be set to only copy from selected drives (by serial number).
New drives plugged in are prompted for a new copy profile and transfers include a progress bar. Ideal for people who do much of their work on remote computers and need to automate the process of backing up their files.
Functional in 64-bit. Note that fully transparent operations (no user notification; runs entirely in background) are only available in the registered version.

Unison is a synchronization tool that allows two collections of files and directories to be stored on different hosts or different disks on the same host. Unlike simple mirroring or backup utilities, the program can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are copied automatically while conflicting updates are detected and shown.
The program is cross-platform (OS X and Linux). X-Unison is a wrapper program for Unison.

Much needed portable (both as in platform independent as in system independent) utility for advanced users. Softpedia download links is dead, but BigD has a working solution (after proper launcher batch script customization) at the link in the previous post. :)

@smallhagrid: I don't know if this program has that functionality - I'd look to FreeFileSync http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1475 or Dsynchronize http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=719 here on the site. |
DirSync Pro is a small but powerful utility for file and folder synchronization. The program can be used to synchronize the content of one or many folders recursively. The program can make both real-time sync (as it happens) as well as incremental updates.
Cross-platform (Java) with clients available for Mac and Linux. Alternatively, a WinPenPack version is also available.

Although I've been more focused on Bvckup 2 for Windows (due to the delta copy feature), DirSync Pro comes in handy on occasions and is far and away my favorite sync program on Mac.

DSynchronize lets you copy, move, or synchronize folders on your computer or over a network. The program can sync in both directions, making both folders up-to-date with the latest data, do real-time sync where any changes copied to destination and even verify it's transfers. The program can schedule operations, add timestamps to the destination folder and keep multiple backups (iterations).
If in use, the program can even eject a USB device when an operation is complete.
Warning: DSynchronize is meant for power users! By default the program does not send deleted files to the Recycle Bin, but are instead deleted outright. Use caution in initial sync tests with sensitive data.

Sinchu: Emphasizing that I've used Dsyncronize for years and it's definitely my go-to sync program, I acknowledge any program that deletes files should probably send them by default to the recycle bin. I've added something to the entry.

Webfork: I had the same problem as sinchu. The program deleted around 500gbs of data overnight. Is there any way I could get this data back? I'm not super knowledgeable in IT but I have a general understanding of how things work. Is there a specific software I could use to get the data back since I don't have any previous versions of the data to restore. Thank you.

@Whitelist: I recommend you post in forums about that. Short version: disconnect the drive that lost data until you're ready to test and look into data recovery programs such as Recuva. |
PathSync synchronizes the contents of two directories. You can choose to synchronize unidirectionally (local to remote, or remote to local), or bidirectionally. Various synchronization options are available, including files to ignore and filename mask. It also provides nifty statistics during the synchronization, so that the user is never wondering how much time is left.

How does the PathSync compare the files? Are their hashes/content compared? What happens when Ignore files size/dates are on? Cheers.

My only issue with this program is for some reason now it keeps making these "PSYN_TMP" files for most of the files I'm syncing, effectively doubling the size of the folder. Also some of the original files seem to be corrupted afterwards. Any idea why it's doing this & how to stop it? |
