FileHandler on 2016-08-20 17:50

Desaster. It broke my Windows system beyond repair. Several programs won't start anymore. Office and Windows lost their service packs. Updates fail, same with restore points. Error messages all over the place.

webfork on 2017-11-21 03:45

@FileHandler As the disclaimer on the entry notes, you're not the first person to have problems with this. If we keep getting issues like this, I'll recommend we take it offline. I don't want to recommend something that doesn't work right.

R-Undelete Home v6.2.169945 Updated

webfork on 19 Nov 2017
  • 57MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 15 Nov 2017
  • Suggested by pplknownothin

R-Undelete recovers files from external USB disks, digital photo and video camera memory cards and other devices with the FAT (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT) file system. In addition, it also uses the scan for known file types, which makes R-Undelete an ideal solution for the recovery of lost digital photos, movies and music.

Note: the majority of Windows storage solutions use NTFS and ReFS, which can only be recovered with the pro version.

From their website: R-Undelete run in the free Home mode has no limitations for recovery from FAT partitions and also allows you to evaluate how the software recovers lost files from the NTFS file system, for which it has a limitation to recover files larger than 64KB. [filelist] can be previewed to estimate recovery chances before you upgrade the Home version for recovery from NTFS partitions

Seems that recovery from NTFS costs money and thus makes this application almost useless today.

This has been flagged as malware by AVG and other programs.

AdrianK_IT on 2012-05-05 13:30

This is one of the NirSoft utilities, and trustworthy. It is flagged as malware as it clearly can be used for malicious reasons ie extract passwords for nefarious purposes. However, it can also be used for good reasons ie extract passwords for recovery purposes etc!
I have learnt to temporarily disable 'real time protection' in AV software when downloading/moving/using these utilities.
I also use them as a simple test of AV software effectiveness; if it doesn't pick up these utilities as potentially malicious, then the AV software is clearly useless!

anyone got this working together with firefox portable? i read that it is possible when pointing to the profile folder but it just fails here.

http://www.fileshredder.org/ is a better program, although it isn't "portable" (must be installed). I've been using it for years.

hamasaki on 2013-09-15 09:07

I agree, for me CyberShredder is a better option.

Beeber on 2015-06-05 18:43

I use shredder.exe. It is less than 150kb and fast. As I work, I can move files to be deleted into a 'new folder', planted anywhere. When I am done, shredder.exe takes the 'new folder', and seconds later, it is gone. Loading individual files works fine, too.

This tool can be used to recover your lost/forgotten password of any website, including popular Web sites, like Facebook, Yahoo, Google, and GMail, as long as the password is stored by your Web Browser.

Currently, WebBrowserPassView cannot retrieve the passwords if they are encrypted with a master password.

To work with Chrome and Opera portable versions, go to 'options' and set the location of the portable browser folder. Select the user data folder in Chrome, and wand.dat for Opera. (Thanks to user "deer".)

Windows Registry Recovery v1.6.1

billon on 7 Mar 2017
  • 3MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Mar 2017
  • Suggested by AlephX

Windows Registry Recovery allows to directly read files containing Windows registry hives and extract many useful information about the configuration and windows installation settings of the host machine.

Note that the program is not simply a registry editor: it works with other tools, including exported keys. It’s useful for seeing registry issues, sandboxing tools, and diagnostics. To your own computer's registry files, open a NTUSER.DAT system file but keep in mind that these are usually hidden by Windows to avoid accidental deletion.

MultiPar v1.2.9.9

webfork on 2 Jan 2017
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 12 Dec 2016
  • Suggested by MarkyMark

MultiPar helps protect backups and transfers with error detection and recovery. The program looks at information from any number of files and folders to function as insurance against data loss. The program generates companion "PAR" files that are built from a percentage of the originals, using more space for greater protection (e.g. 10% of the original for already safe methods, 50% for frequent failures).

The program has a wide variety of customizations including format, processor usage, and various other tools available to the standard PAR format. For backups, it can also choose PAR size by available free space (e.g. saving a 3 gig file to a 4.7 gig DVD will mean generating a 1.7 gig PAR file).

Functional in Linux/Mac via WINE. The program supports multi-threading, multiple processors, can recurse subfolders, and functions with standard formats including PAR, PAR2, and (experimental) PAR3 formats.

  • Fixed and adjusted multiple areas of the user interface to better handle systems with high DPI enabled. Many new laptops are coming with HD screens that have a very large resolution and so their DPI is set very high to make programs and text readable. When this increase DPI was set many parts of the program didn't draw correctly. There are still a few areas that need adjusting but all the major ones have been fixed.
