VaultPad is a simple text and file encryptor. The program can take text, attachments, or both to create an easy-to-share XML file for storage or sharing.
The program uses AES cipher (symmetric-key pairs) to encrypt local messages and RSA/AES cipher (public/private key pairs) for shared messages. A SHA-512 cipher is used to hash passwords, so they aren't stored in the application itself. A MD5 algorithm is used to check embedded files for corruption. VaultPad will handle third party public keys to be able to encrypt/decrypt their files directly.

ClipAngel records all data copied including text, images and files, making it easy to retrieve earlier data where Windows usually allows only one item at a time. The program keeps data even after reboot and can paste in RDP, CMD, elevated windows etc. independently from current input language. Clipboard views include rich text and HTML formatting, filtering by text and details on URL, application and window data.
The program can emulate keyboard input and includes customizable hotkeys. For additional security, the program can block specific applications where passwords may be copied and encrypt stored items.

One does not need the BAT file ("ClipAngelPortable.bat") to start ClipAngel in portable mode, just run the EXE with this parameter- "ClipAngel.exe /p".

The sourceforge page says portability can also be achieved by the "presence of file PortableMode.txt". |
SavageEd2 is a very small and fast Notepad replacement. It can edit files of any size, limited only by memory. It can encrypt text files using AES encryption with 256 bit key (max 32 character password) in .enc format. It has Pattern searching features and written in x86 assembly language (HLA).
Note: SavageEd2 is the replacement for former SavageEd.

The former program's webpage (see below) is very outdated. Linked to Github. |
Rdex is a freeform database which can be used to store addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, online ids, recipes etc. basically any miscellaneous piece of information. It is based on the idea of a cardfile, like a Rolodex. Just click "New Card," paste or type in some info and click save. Later, you can search for any text contained in the card by typing the word you are searching for into the search box at the top.
Rdex is available for Windows, Java and Android. If you keep the data file on a cloud storage service such as Dropbox, your data is available anywhere and you can maintain sync between mobile and desktop access. Rdex can also encrypt the data file if you wish to ensure privacy.

Have used this for sometime now as my default desktop note app. Launches very quickly, easy to setup and use, and has a small footprint. Useful for taking basic notes quickly. Other than fonts, doesn't provide other options to change its appearance, allowing the user to focus on writing notes rather than on distracting options such as page layouts, backgrounds, colors, graphics, structure, or setting up menus. |
NoteCase is a hierarchical note manager (or outliner) that helps you organize text notes in a tree-like structure within a single document. You can optionally encrypt the document with a passphrase for privacy reasons.
Note: Discontinued. There is a lite version of its successor "NoteCase Pro" here.

notecase is a solid program I've used for about 2 years. no easter eggs, tom; it's GTK made portable, which GTK isn't supposed to do. This guy figured out how. notecase is crossplatform. if you're always going to be an M$ drone, then you don't care and should maybe keep quiet; otherwise, don't knock it Until you try it.

DropIt provides a floating target image on your desktop that you can drag-and-drop files to quickly process them with a predefined action. Actions include: copy, compress, extract, rename, delete, split, join, encrypt, decrypt, open with, print, upload, send by mail, create gallery, create list, create playlist, create shortcut, copy to clipboard, change properties and ignore. A destination can be chosen for each association defined, as well as group associations in any number of profiles.
Users can create rules to filter files based on name, directory, size, date, properties, content or regular expressions. Existing files in destination folders can be defined to overwrite, skip, or rename them. It includes a multi-language interface, folder monitoring, shared folders support, SendTo and Command-Line support, environment variables support, automatic update and much more.

Great little utility. I regularly have a lot of zip files I need to move to different locations. This is a real timesaver. |
MAXA Crypt Mobile allows anyone to easily encrypt files, directory trees, and text. Multiple files can be encrypted and compressed into a single file. Uses the 256-bit AES algorithm.

I tried using this portable app to encrypt three test files. The input clearly let me add three files without trouble. However, after encryption, only the first first was actually encrypted. The other two files were ignored. |
FreeOTFE, named for "on-the-fly disk encryption" creates one or more encrypted virtual disks using numerous available encryption algorithms (e.g. AES, Twofish, Serpent, and many more), and can be used to encrypt entire partitions. A separate application that doesn't require administrative rights called FreeOTFE Explorer is also available from the same site, using an Explorer-like interface (see version comparison).
64-bit users: FreeOTFE Explorer is functional, but Windows 7 64-bit users cannot use FreeOTFE as the drivers are unsigned.
Note: On startup, you will receive a message asking you to use portable mode drivers to start the virtual disk drivers (you need administrator rights to do this, otherwise the menu item will be grayed out). When you shutdown the program, you will also be given the option to stop the virtual disk drivers.
Note: Site offline -- linking to Sourceforge mirror.

Peter202: for reasons I can get into in the forums, I still recommend TrueCrypt despite issues mentioned in the press. Still for most people, FreeOTFE is more than adequate.

@webfork What exactly is the danger of using TrueCrypt? I need encryption software mostly to create a virtual volume from which i want to run my portable applications.

@spicydog: ESET has long detected one of the installers on that site (dssfv_setup.exe) as a virus. I have notified them on a number of occasions that it is a false positive (based on scans of that file from Jotti's, VirSCAN.org and VirusTotal), but with no result. It would seem as though they have now blocked the entire domain. All you can do is to lodge a job with ESET support. The website hasn't been updated in a long time, but if the webmaster was still around, if you could get them to lodge a job as well, that would help. |
