  • 6MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 28 May 2017

Back4Sure is a feature-rich backup solution for typical backup use. The program can make a backup to hard-disk, USB drive or network and can also be compressed using high or low compression settings to a ZIP or 7-zip file of various compression levels, as well as encrypted for security.

Other features include filters to backup or exclude specific file types, a cleanup mode to remove old archives, and creation of one or multiple zip files (separated by directory structure). Backups are saved by directory structure either inside the archive or inside the directory for easy restoring. Users can also use multiple settings profiles, or "job" files.

Technomancer: if you mean the entry is unclear, please let us know in forums. If you mean the program itself (and for the RAR distro issue) you might want to contact the developer directly.

ihateyou on 2013-12-15 18:36

what you should know:
Cleanup is optional - it is very close related to an incremental backup.
Using this you have to select the same Target Directory as before to backup only changed files and to delete files on the backup that have been deleted on the original file system as well (the latter one is the actual Cleanup).

Hope it helps ;)

romulous on 2015-01-11 06:52

It's a crying shame that you can only backup folders with this tool, and not individual files within those folders (yes, I know you can set filters, but unless you know in advance what files you want from each folder, this is not practical to use).

There are a lot of great ways to compress files and folders quickly and easily, but most people are only familiar with ZIP. PeaExtractor's broad support means that it frees us up to send the latest and best compression formats without wondering if the recipient will have difficulty opening it.

PortableApps.com AppCompactor v3.4.0

billon on 7 Feb 2017
  • 787KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 6 Feb 2017
  • Suggested by Checker

PortableApps.com AppCompactor allows you to compress whole directories including applications, file libraries, and zip files. The program is a powerful compression tool that unites 7-zip and UPX inside a user-friendly wizard. For applications, this saves disk space and increases performance when running from a slow media (like flash drives). For archives, this will recompress DLL, EXE, ZIP, JAR, IRC, PYD and BIN files to their maximum compression settings, as well as an option to decompress an app's binary files that were previously compressed with UPX.

All files are tested using UPX's test feature after compressing. Files smaller than 4K are automatically skipped as compressing will not save space on the drive. The standard Microsoft Visual C runtimes are skipped to prevent antivirus false-positives. Advanced configuration can be done with apps in PortableApps.com Format.

Note: As UPX will alter the EXEs and DLLs (reversible using the Decompress option in the AppCompactor) and some apps may have issues with Zip or Jar files compressed further, users should backup software and test it after processing.

7-Zip Portable v16.04

webfork on 26 Jan 2017
  • 6MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Oct 2016
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

7-Zip is an archive manager that can view and create a wide variety of formats. The program includes folder favorites, optional two-pane view, checksum calculator, file split/combine capability, and more. Individual archives can be created with high speed or high compression settings, update options (including update, add/replace, synchronize), split volumes, and more. Archives can be secured with standard zip or more secure AES encryption.

Although the official archiver for the open, high-compression "7z" format, the program also supports the creation of multiple formats including ZIP, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, and WIM. It will extract a long list of other formats, among them RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, RPM, VHD, VMDK, etc.

7-Zip Portable is a wrapper from PortableApps.com, auto-detecting 32 or 64-bit automatically. Alternatively, X-7zip is also available.

@Special:
What? What are you talking about? What broken, what reported, what plain .txt file? Can you elaborate?

Special on 2017-01-24 02:20

Normally you would need to know the password to access a passworded 7z archive or to even look inside one, but by using the 7z file manager you can still add stuff into a passworded archive by just dragging & dropping stuff onto it, for example a blank .txt file, that is the first part, then with the use of a simple Hex editor (HxD) you can break the password "lock" if you know what to look for. What I'm saying is, use 7-Zip for your compression needs, but for encrypting sensitive stuff you plan on uploading onto the web, look elsewhere.

demon.devin on 2017-09-14 12:17

Here's my 7-Zip Portable made with my modified version of the PA.c Launcher:
https://github.com/demondevin/7-ZipPortable

I've added support for shell integration as well as the context menu features. I even added support for file type associations to where you may specify which formats you'd like associated with 7-Zip during runtime. Plus I've added a SendTo shortcut which is available for any file types that aren't associated but are supported for use with 7-Zip.

And yes ..it's still very much portable! Read the ReadMe file on the GitHub project page on how to add associations or how to set the shell extension/context menu features...

Why all the fuss over RAR? The biggest problem is getting RAR to ZIP so it's compatible to more people in the world, not less. 1980 called, they want their compressor back.

Midas on 2014-05-25 19:18

The changelog posted is for ArcConvert v0.66, plus there now seems to be a 64 bits version linked at the bottom of the Sourceforge page ("Update for 64bit OS").

Note also that although WinRAR gives you a 30 day trial, as the meme goes, it will never end...

DavidRoper: even among very technical people, I can't seem to get anyone to use anything but ZIP. The dream of getting people to use one of a number of radically better compression formats has been going on for over a decade now and at this stage just seems like a lost cause.

Jpg+FileBinder v1.0

smaragdus on 13 Jun 2017
  • 383KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 29 May 2010
  • Suggested by anonimice

Jpg+FileBinder is able to hide files in a picture file by merging one of three compressed file types (.zip, .rar, .7z) with an ordinary JPEG image file. This basic steganography makes the compressed file look like any other JPEG image file to the operating system and any image viewer. Meanwhile, if users try to open the file using WinRAR or 7-Zip, the compressed files will appear.

This may be used as a camouflage for information or to help transfer non-image format files through image hosting-only services. Note that this program does not include encryption by default and only joins image files and archive files. To enable security, use password-protection provided by your compression program.

File Replicator v1.2.1

File Replicator allows you to replace a file in a destination directory that has many instances of the file, without having to manually search.

For example, if 7-zip.exe is a component of many programs in your portable collection, you'll want the latest and greatest version added to all of them. Simply select the destination to search (e.g. USB drive letter) and the file you wish to replace. From there it will search the drive and show a list of successful files found and ask if you wish to overwrite.
