File Replicator is a batch file search-and-replace that lets you modify all instances of a file in a destination directory or drive without having to manually search. For example, if 7-zip.exe is a component of many programs in your portable collection, you can enable the latest-and-greatest version added to all of them. Simply select the destination to search (e.g. USB drive letter) and the file you wish to replace. From there it will search the drive and show a list of successful files found and ask if you wish to overwrite.

@billon and bitcoin: Couldn't find a mirror either. Added note to entry. |
FreeOTFE, named for "on-the-fly disk encryption" creates one or more encrypted virtual disks using numerous available encryption algorithms (e.g. AES, Twofish, Serpent, and many more), and can be used to encrypt entire partitions. A separate application that doesn't require administrative rights called FreeOTFE Explorer is also available from the same site, using an Explorer-like interface (see version comparison).
64-bit users: FreeOTFE Explorer is functional, but Windows 7 64-bit users cannot use FreeOTFE as the drivers are unsigned.
Note: On startup, you will receive a message asking you to use portable mode drivers to start the virtual disk drivers (you need administrator rights to do this, otherwise the menu item will be grayed out). When you shutdown the program, you will also be given the option to stop the virtual disk drivers.
Note: Site offline -- linking to Sourceforge mirror.

Peter202: for reasons I can get into in the forums, I still recommend TrueCrypt despite issues mentioned in the press. Still for most people, FreeOTFE is more than adequate.

@webfork What exactly is the danger of using TrueCrypt? I need encryption software mostly to create a virtual volume from which i want to run my portable applications.

Visual CD is a disk cataloging tool to index CD/DVDs, floppy disks, hard disks, and even folders. You can then explore the disk catalogs, search files and folders, create MP3 playlist file without having the physical disks in the drive. Upon insertion of the corresponding disk, you can open files, split files into smaller pieces, extract ZIP, RAR, and CAB archive, and more.

Is it possible to change Visual CD in such a way that it compensates for USB memory stick drive letter changes, and use \Catalogs as path instead of E:\VisualCD\Catalogs?

The main reason you wouldn't use --lzma with UPX is for speed; NRV is faster. Although both tend to be so fast it doesn't matter, the size difference also usually doesn't matter.

JkDefrag is a low-overhead disk defragmentator with support for multiple optimization strategies. Besides your usual fixed disks, it is also able to defragment removable flash devices in a way that minimizes overall writes. A variety of command-line options for fine-tuned optimization are available. Started without these options, the program activates immediately and defrags all disks.
An interface that gives more control is also available: JkDefragGUI (by Emiel Wieldraaijer). Alternatively, JkDefrag Portable is also available with a custom open source GUI.

I am pretty ticked off at this program. I installed it, and did not like it at all. Tried to UNinstall it, and very tough. It's not on the Windows menu, no where in the XP add / remove control panel. I am using Norton, which will hopefully uninstall all of it from the registry.

uh, Pikadude, FreeCommander can be uninstalled. Shows up in the control panel and has an uninstall routine. Beware of Alt Commander. Do not trust a program that does not offer uninstall or document what was done in the installation process. |
FileCommander is a feature-rich, multi-pane file manager that supports up to 4 simultaneous browser windows (enabled with "View", "Extended view"). File highlighting to separate different file types and comes with 3 different "themes," or skins. Includes a process list, folder comparison/synchronization tool, MD5 hash, file splitter, network monitor, virtual drives, file sharing, CD burner etc. ZIP, 7zip and RAR files are handled as folders and file preview tool (F3) allows a quick-view for a long list of file types. Additionally, the program includes an "open with" capability that supports relative pathways, allowing FileCommander to open files using other portable software.
Performance enhancements over regular Explorer include individual threads for each window so the rest of the program doesn't slow down during one window's process (e.g. CD spin-up, network delay). Internal clipboard means Windows' own clipboard will not be overwritten.

Update: after extensive use, although program had a lot of promise but its unfortunately really buggy. Drag and drop outside of the window doesn't work, wouldn't refresh a new cd that was inserted, and many, many minor glitches. Pass on this one.

A good fast cataloger which creates a single file from each disk (.cf4) whose size ranges from 1K to 200k for lots of files. Its very fast and small. The find feature needs more work as it only locates the first find.
