I tested it and ImageBatch worked for me under Windows 8 x64. It threw error messages only when I tried to add folders and files with Unicode names- it could not process them because ImageBatch does not support Unicode. It is very unlikely that this program will ever be updated.

@smaragdus thing is I found that even paths with no Unicode resulted in the same error so not sure what it is (didn't try Midas' suggestion however). The files themselves were named 0001.bmp, and onward, about 400 files in all, and were being converted to PNG, fwiw.

HotKeyz allows you to define system hotkeys like "WIN+F" for a wide variety of actions from executing applications to a long list of system actions. By default, it features settings for minimizing, maximizing, restoring, or closing the active window. You can launch your e-mail window to compose a new email, control WinAmp-compatible players without opening the main window, or paste pre-defined text, special characters, or the current date and time.
System functions include opening and closing your CD or DVD ROM drive, power off, shutdown, logoff or rebooting. Start your screen saver, hide/unhide your desktop, taskbar, and more.

Don't like mess with programming much then use HotKeyz as it's much easier than AutoHotKey but if you want more powerful ways of handling not only shortcuts, but also the Windows themselves and a bunch of other things, use AutoHotkey.

It is a shame that HotKeyz has been discontinued without being made open-source. I still like it very much and still use it every day- it is very easy to configure. HotKeyz still works fine on Windows 8. |

Universal Extractor allows you to extract files from a wide variety of archive files, including ZIP, ARJ, LZH, as well as MSI and EXE files created using various installer packages (such as Nullsoft, Wise, Inno Setup, etc). Useful for testing apps for portability because you can extract files directly from installer packages without having to go through the installation process. Note that the original developer no longer updates the program so some manual updates may be required.
Alternatively, an unofficial version with the latest-and-greatest internals is available (on Lupo's PenSuite site).
Commercial use note: license restrictions are present on included files UHARC02.EXE and UHARC04.EXE, but can be deleted without dramatic impact on the software. See website for more information.

My current preferred notepad replacement, after swapping the hideous default icon with the the vanilla one from notepad (TY, ResHack). Shame it doesn't do text case conversions, then it would be perfect -- as it is, I use a well known commercial editor for heavy duty text editing and nfoPad (totally portable from v1.56, see post @ http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5409) for nfo file viewing. For the rest, Win32Pad is lightning fast and perfectly fit for the common text checking/light editing tasks. I don't hesitate to recommend it!

fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts saved information in self-contained executable (.EXE) files. Created files don't need fSekrit and can be access by simply double-clicking the item and entering the correct password.
Uses the widely recognized 256-bit AES encryption and unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.
Functional in 64-bit.

- fixed: long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of error and let user attempt to save again. - fixed: saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done. - added: font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting. - added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though! To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same folder as the document you want to function in portable mode. - added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks. - fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing "make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :) - fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :) |

GSplit is a versatile file-splitter that can split a large file into multiple parts based on user-specified parameters. It is also able to generate self-uniting executables (with file corruption auto-detection) that do not require any program on the destination machine.
This is useful for transferring files when there is a bandwidth or storage cap.

Wow did this work well! It's a no-brainer to use and did exactly what it said it would do. I tried to cram a huge 143MB file through the system yesterday and it kept choking and dying - after an hour of trying. I used GSplit and it went through in under five minutes for all of the smaller files. I tested re-assembly on my end and it was a no-brainer too.

Lots of potential. I currently use whizfolders and like the cleaner interface of the Guide but one feature I consider critical is the ability to copy nodes between documents.

Just tested The Guide and it crashed within two minutes use. It has a severe bug and crashes on startup if you have selected "Load last used document" in the preferences. As development seems stopped it is unlikely the bug will be fixed.

Another potentially brilliant app for random slideshow viewing of images under voice commands - ruined by the fact that when you pause a slideshow, a 'Paused' message appears on screen, and doesn't go away (until you un-pause)!
