Although I've been more focused on Bvckup 2 for Windows (due to the delta copy feature), DirSync Pro comes in handy on occasions and is far and away my favorite sync program on Mac.

@webfork
I also like and use DirSync Pro- it is packed with features and has a great preview (Analyze).

Various synchronization options are available, including files to ignore and filename mask. It also provides nifty statistics during the synchronization, so that the user is never wondering how much time is left.

Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: GPL v2
How to extract: Download the installer, extract pathsync.exe to a folder of your choice and launch.

  • Preliminary unicode filename support (via UTF-8).
  • Uses more of WDL for file read/write.
  • Fixed bug in fn matching for directories.
  • Updated to latest WDL.

How does the PathSync compare the files? Are their hashes/content compared? What happens when Ignore files size/dates are on? Cheers.

DG on 2011-09-23 15:45

My only issue with this program is for some reason now it keeps making these "PSYN_TMP" files for most of the files I'm syncing, effectively doubling the size of the folder. Also some of the original files seem to be corrupted afterwards. Any idea why it's doing this & how to stop it?

Unison is a synchronization tool that allows two collections of files and directories to be stored on different hosts or different disks on the same host. Unlike simple mirroring or backup utilities, the program can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are copied automatically while conflicting updates are detected and shown.

The program is cross-platform (OS X and Linux). X-Unison is a wrapper program for Unison.

Much needed portable (both as in platform independent as in system independent) utility for advanced users. Softpedia download links is dead, but BigD has a working solution (after proper launcher batch script customization) at the link in the previous post. :)

FreeFileSync Portable v6.2

webfork on 27 Sep 2020
  • 9MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 5 Feb 2014
  • Suggested by bassiliin

FreeFileSync is a folder comparison and synchronization tool. It supports filters, file sizes greater than 4GB, delete-before-copy for large sync operations, and creation of batch files for automated synchronization. After compare process (by date or content) operations can be customized on a file-by-file basis.

FreeFileSync Portable is in PortableApps.com Format, automatically adjusting paths.

Notes:

  • The latest version of this program is adware (offers for installation of 3rd party software), may not be open source, and locks itself to a specific path (only the drive letter may change), but a more recent version of this program (v7.9) can be made portable. Note that the update check will run whenever the runtime path changes even if you disable it.
  • FreeFileSync versions 6.3 and later can not be run from a portable menu or scheduling software due to a unfixed bug in the app.

I liked this utility very much, but it stopped being portable to non-donors (being a donor in Brazil is complicated for many reasons). I looked for other similar utilities. Here I found fastcopy, I found it interesting. I had the happiness of finding SyncFolders, which is also portable. You can find it here http://www.syncfolders.elementfx.com. I think portablefreeware.com could add it here.

Midas on 2017-01-25 13:07

@wagner reatto: SyncFolders has been suggested at the Forum (see https://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22039) where software garners more attention and testing. É só uma dica aqui do sítio... ;)

Bvckup 2 v68 (beta)

webfork on 18 Feb 2022
  • 589KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 31 Dec 2014
  • Suggested by Midas

Bvckup 2 is a backup/synchronization tool that uses "delta" copy methods, meaning it only transfers changes to a file or files rather than recopying the entire set. This is frequently faster, saves bandwidth for network backups and can help flash media live longer by reducing the overall number of disk writes. The program can do real-time, periodic or manual backups, and also functions as a file copier that can pause and resume both local and network transfers.

Note: this program is an unsupported beta, meaning that the author provides a commercial version of the program that includes support. A previous, freeware version with fewer features is available from bvckup.com.

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: Application folder
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware (unsupported beta)
How to extract:
  1. Download the program and rename to Bvckup2.exe
  2. Create an empty text file in this folder and paste in the following content:

    SET conf-dir="%~dp0Config"
    START "" bvckup2.exe -c %conf-dir%

  3. Rename the text file bvckup2-portable.bat
  4. Launch bvckup2-portable.bat
  5. Under Options - Preferences - Software updates, select "Don't check don't remind," as this program will always suggest downloading the latest version, which is not freeware.

Note: Over time that the contents of the "Config" can grow to substantial size. If it grows too large for your storage device, start a new profile and delete the old folder.

@Midas

Yeah, sure I tested it.

Trashcan? Despite being logged in, I cannot see one.

From https://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7616#p29747, I quote:
'Basically if you have a non-zero rank and you are logged in, you will find a "trash can" icon at the end of every comment.'

I infer that my rank is too lowly to even be allowed to take out the trash.

Supports filters, compression and more.

Great for backing up/synchronizing your work or home documents to flash memory or saving every change you make to your text, source code, images etc.

Supports 64-bit.

I have used SyncExp for years now and find it impossible to do without.
I do have a problem though. I would like either to turn off the automatic log file updating or somehow redirect the log file to another folder instead of the syncexp.exe folder.
Can anyone help?

BlueFish File Mirror v1.8b

I am Baas on 13 Dec 2015
  • 577KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on
  • Suggested by I am Baas

BlueFish File Mirror monitors two identical folders (up to 100) and maintains any changes, copying to another root folder in real-time. Supports large file operations (over 4 gigs).

Limitations:

  • BlueFish can only mirror changes after it starts, so folders must be identical before running the program. Also, the BlueFish only monitors physical file changes, not attributes such as date, time, and read-only changes.
  • Does not support unicode path names

Note: this program is offline, switched download location to Softpedia.

Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch Config.exe to configure program settings (writes to config.ini), then launch BlueFish.exe.
What's new?
  • Minor bug fixes.
  • Fixes a bug in configurator which makes the excluded folders not be excluded.

I tried BlueFish on my laptop to keep the "My Documents" folder in sync with my main desktop computer and it does work nicely, although not in the way I thought it would.

I chose to monitor the "My Documents" folder on my Windows XP laptop and have it mirrored to the "Documents" folder on my desktop computer running Vista. BlueFish started by mirroring the entire folder structure containing the "My Documents" folder, so there was a new folder called "Documents and Settings" under the "Documents" folder on my Vista computer.

It would be nice to choose the My Documents folder to be the root folder rather than have BlueFish mirror the entire folder structure in which "Documents and Settings" is the root. I don't foresee this problem if the two computers being synchronized are both running the same version of Windows.

I don't mean to make such a long post and I'm not putting this program down as I do think it has potential. I'm going to see if I can find a workaround to sync my folders across two different operating systems.

link to download and website appear dead?

smallhagrid on 2013-01-25 19:08

Lupo Pensuite has it - but there's no way to tell if it really can ONLY do file changes or not.
I have a single database file I update and use at home & work (because of my poor memory...), it is 50mb+, so if I've got to copy it whole it is a huge time-waster.
Has anyone here gotten this to just copy changes into the destination file ?!?
Thanks.

@smallhagrid: I don't know if this program has that functionality - I'd look to FreeFileSync http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1475 or Dsynchronize http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=719 here on the site.
