Phoner is a softphone capable of placing/receiving VoIP calls through SIP. It also supports sending emails with built-in SMTP client, sending of SMS to mobile phones, recording of calls, working as answering machine with remote polling, etc.
Note: Phoner is a more powerful version of PhonerLite, with more features thrown in. They use the same DLL and configuration data (sipper.ini) and can co-exist in the same folder.

This software is not noisefree. Annoying and very disturbing cracks when using wifi with reduced bandwidth makes it unusable.

Phoner is at version 2.38 as of this posting. It works great from a USB stick. Tip: if you want audio ring tones and other sounds (feedback), then in menu "Options" sub-menu "Voices" change the settings for all (Incoming call, Outgoing call, Busy, etc...) from "x\install directory\Phoner\RingIn.wav" etc, to "..\Phoner\RingIn.wav" etc, etc... (without quotes). This way the sound files will work for any drive lettter your thumb drive gets allocated. |

Isotoxin is a feature-rich secure messenger that lets you connect over your local network or the Internet. The program supports audio and video, desktop sharing (view only), file/folder sharing, inline images, group chats and user profiles. Available extras include spell check, avatars, themes, auto gain / noise filter for audio and much more.
The Tox protocol is peer-to-peer, meaning no central server is necessary for the network to function.
Includes basic support for the XMPP (Jabber) protocol.

@Realist: I haven't tested it because, unlike Isotoxin, WhatsApp is only out for Win8 and higher, closed source, and and is owned by Facebook. Their Wikipedia page lists some other concerns.

@Realist - Just go to web.whatsapp.com. Their "app" is just a wrapper for that.

QuteCom (previously called WengoPhone) is a free SIP-compliant Voice over IP softphone. It can be used for audio and video chats with other SIP clients and even call landlines using a SIP provider.
QuteCom Portable is a version of the software from PortableApps.com. Alternatively, X-QuteCom is also available.
