Why all the fuss over RAR? The biggest problem is getting RAR to ZIP so it's compatible to more people in the world, not less. 1980 called, they want their compressor back.

Midas on 2014-05-25 19:18

The changelog posted is for ArcConvert v0.66, plus there now seems to be a 64 bits version linked at the bottom of the Sourceforge page ("Update for 64bit OS").

Note also that although WinRAR gives you a 30 day trial, as the meme goes, it will never end...

DavidRoper: even among very technical people, I can't seem to get anyone to use anything but ZIP. The dream of getting people to use one of a number of radically better compression formats has been going on for over a decade now and at this stage just seems like a lost cause.

Thanks, Lupo73, for that info. Looks like the download link should point to the Sourceforge link that comes from the website page.

ArcThemALL sorely lacks a critical "List" option to examine an archive contents BEFORE launching
any decompression operation.

Voted Down.

Brickbats accepted/Vote reverted in case this option were demonstrated to be available after all...;-)

@ misan: If you klick on the little "?"-icon behind "Stealth" ...

What makes an application "stealth"?

For the purpose for this website, "stealth" means when an application is launched, used and terminated properly, it does not leave behind any entries in the registry or filesystem. Certain exceptions are permitted. For example, registry entries that are created/updated by Windows for the application (eg. MRU entries for dialog boxes, DirectX entries for DirectX-based apps), or temp files created in the official "Temp" folders are not taken into consideration. Note: "Stealth" does not mean non-traceability! In fact, it is quite unlikely you can hide your activities on a Windows machine from a capable system administrator.

Other than that, the author has bad news. :(

"Now comes the part i hate the most. About the future of this project. Pretty cloudy, i may say. Some points :
- This is the last version written in AutoIT (i may change my mind if someone will give me a good reason to continue with au3);
- I would really like to continue this project, but after a while coding the same thing becomes boring. I feel like i'm developing an application just for me, with no actual users out there. If someone sees this message and is considering that my SFXMaker development should continue, send me feedback (via e-mail most probably, forums are down), telling me why he does so.
- If, by any chance, this project will continue, i would like to set up a mini dev-team, to work for a brand new SFXMakert, written maybe in C/C++. Dunno."

Universal Extractor v1.6.1

webfork on 8 Jul 2016

  • Suggested by DigeratiPrime

Universal Extractor allows you to extract files from a wide variety of archive files, including ZIP, ARJ, LZH, as well as MSI and EXE files created using various installer packages (such as Nullsoft, Wise, Inno Setup, etc). Useful for testing apps for portability because you can extract files directly from installer packages without having to go through the installation process. Note that the original developer no longer updates the program so some manual updates may be required.

Alternatively, an unofficial version with the latest-and-greatest internals is available (on Lupo's PenSuite site).

Commercial use note: license restrictions are present on included files UHARC02.EXE and UHARC04.EXE, but can be deleted without dramatic impact on the software. See website for more information.

UPX Tool v1.0.3 (unofficial 1.1.1)

webfork on 23 Feb 2016
  • 274KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on
  • Suggested by Gary

UPX is a tool that can reduce the size of system files (EXE and DLL) significantly. No additional software is required after compression and some programs will even run faster due to fewer read operations.

UPX Tool is a GUI wrapper for UPX, able to both compress and decompress.

There is an unofficial update created by Lupo PenSuite (UPX Tool+ 1.1.1) that can be download here. The main advantage of this update is functionality with UPX 3.0 (improved compression via LZMA).

Thats because virus-scanners are scamware. They nowadays recognize anything which MAY someway be related to malware (i.e. a trojan hiding itself via executable compression!) as virus. I had that happen recently to me with a business client - we had Imagine (image viewer) running for years, then at some day Avira decided to classify it as a trojan, because.... it was packed with a certain executable compressor.

Virus-scanners nowadays are designed for morons who are unable to make decisions based on information - they are made for clueless people who want to be told if something is "good" or "bad", NOT "perhaps" or "maybe".

The main reason you wouldn't use --lzma with UPX is for speed; NRV is faster. Although both tend to be so fast it doesn't matter, the size difference also usually doesn't matter.
