Is "Recuva v.1.53.2078" an online installer?
Upon download, it says it can install now?
I am very wary of online installers ..... and prefer not to use them.

I usually never complain when there is a way to make a program portable but I have just wasted about half an hour updating (copying, moving, deleting, renaming) the native compressed version of Pidgin. And I forgot that the working Facebook plug-in was not included in the package and had to download it separately (but before that I deleted the "unknown" Facebook profile). Why do the developers still keep the no longer working Facebook-XMPP plug-in and do not adopt the working Facebook Chat (purple-facebook) plug-in is a mystery to me. Pidgin developers offer an offline installer (containing GTK+) and GTK+ for Windows yet they do not intend to provide a compressed portable-ready version for Windows. Updating Pidgin is a pain, as it is a pain to make it portable on first run.

MIKLO on 2016-06-30 14:41

WOW I find this really interesting that this software has been being downloaded or at least talked about for 9 years. Some of the first comments talk about this being worthless and a waste of time cuz Pidgin already has a Portable version. There is also talk about Haller wasting his time doing this... hmmm so what am I doing here also wasting my time? lol Anyway in my opinion any and all discussion even on so called "worthless" builds serve a purpose. If nothing else I get a link in my email letting me know that there is something I can go see and waste my time on some "worthless" and not needed software. Aint life great?

I figured out how to uninstall the user-chosen (custom) languages but it takes a little work.
1: Open PSPad.ini (if you opened it with PSPad or if PSPad is running, save it as something else).
2: Delete the UserHighLighterName# value / data pair where the language is listed (the crosshatch is either null or a number between 1 and 4).
3: Delete the language key and all value / data pairs appertaining to it.
4: If PSPad is running, close it - then replace the PSPad.ini file with your changes. Voila! Your user-selected language slot is ready for another language!
I have posted a request to add a mechanism to do this automatically on the PSPad forum which is very active and the author of the software posts often - not what you'd expect from "dead" software.
BTW: Be cautious about using the installer - it seems to have had some problems. Use the zip file instead and unpack the files to a folder of your choice.

Shadeclan on 2012-09-14 14:46

If it's ok, I'd just like to make a few more comments:
Viniciusban writes that PSPad has no comment-out tool. I don't know if that was true when he posted, but it has one now:
Format menu / Add/Remove Comment.

Webfork writes that it has trouble handling Very Large Files (VLF). In my experience, there are only a very few editors that can handle VLFs without absorbing all available RAM and none of them (with the possible exception of UltraEdit) is as full-featured as PSPad IMHO. If I must view / edit a VLF, I always use HiEditor from WinASM.net as it is made specifically to work on VLFs without hosing the computer. Unfortunately, it isn't offered on PortableFreeware.com but it is completely portable, writes all settings to an INI file and is very fast.

Tom mentions that the "stable" version is 4.5.4. Currently it is 4.5.6 and was uploaded about 11 months ago. Beta version, available from the forum and updated August 2012, is very stable - if the latest version is wanted, grab it from there.

PSPad has its problems but they all do - that's why there isn't just a single text editor that everybody uses. While Notepad++ is (undeniably) the most popular text editor for programmers, I find its interface somewhat obscure and its learning curve a bit too steep to make it useful to me. PSPad's interface is much cleaner and simpler and, if I don't use it for months at a time, I can come back to it without worrying about relearning anything - that's why PSPad is my text editor of choice.

rbon on 2019-12-25 18:09

I wanted a paf version of PSPad and I tried the online installer version of @prapper which unfortunately does not work.
So in the discussion https://portableapps.com/comment/242253#comment-242253 I left a note (# 22).
Be careful: when you extract the installer you have to delete the folders:
- $ PLUGINSDIR
- 7zTemp
and copy the rest into .\PSPadPortable.
Then update to the latest portable version which must be unpacked in .\PSPadPortable\App\PSPad\

ClamWin Portable v0.103.2.1 Rev 0.103.7

lwc on 15 Apr 2023

ClamWin is the Windows version of ClamAV, a virus and spyware scanner which database is constantly maintained by a group of volunteers and updates are always available for free. Note that the program does not contain an on-access real-time scanner; you must manually scan a file in order to detect malware or use a third party tool like the general purpose Directory Monitor (see Execute scripts/applications when events occur) or the outdated Clam Sentinel.

ClamWin Portable is a portable wrapper for ClamWin and can be modified to automatically update virus database periodically or during startup.

Just go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/files/clamwin/, find the latest version folder and download the clamwin-0.9x.x-setup-nodb.exe, which is only about 8MB -- after (Uni)extracting, you'll find all the files you need for updating in the '{app}\bin' folder...

@robzuc: see 'What is "portable"' on the "about" page: https://www.portablefreeware.com/about.php Not leaving stuff behind is not "stealth" in the parlance here, and uTorrent works fine when moving from machine to machine and saves your settings.

Antivirus programs have a tendency to quarantine or delete Produkey, HeapMemView, and a few of Nir's password recovery tools as well. 90% of Nirsoft utils will pass inspection just fine. Nirsoft is NOT malware by design, and so long as you keep your firewall, user accounts and security updates reasonably current, you'll do just fine. I suppose, in the wrong hands, some of the tools might be mildly threatening to low-security systems. Chances are, though, if a skilled cracker set out to compromise your system, they'd likely use something stronger than Nir's utilities to do it.

Faust on 2010-06-07 15:00

What carbonize and Void said.

Nirsoft's utils are not malware and will not damage your system. However, because they usually poke around in your system looking for info, they use methods that malware often uses, and which causes antivirus programs to identify them as malware.

MIKLO on 2014-04-29 20:30

WOW no comments for a long time but be advised that ProduKey as well as all Nirsoft's programs are safe and are not malware, spyware, viruses or any other bad stuff for your computer. Nirsoft is now and has always been a very good reputable place to get software and many kinds of Apps that help us to use and program out computers how we want without the end user having the abilty to write the code necessary to accomplish this. So thanks so much NIRSOFT for all the great APPS I have used for so many years that have helped me run my computers. PROFFS
