SmartSniff is a network analysis/diagnostic tool that allows you to capture TCP/IP packets that pass through your network adapter. You can view the captured data as sequence of conversations between clients and servers in ASCII mode (for text-based protocols, like HTTP, SMTP, POP3 and FTP) or as hex dump (for non text-based protocols, like DNS).

On Win2K or above, SmartSniff is able to capture TCP/IP packets using raw sockets. This method has some limitations and problems, but it does not require any additional installation. A better way to capture TCP/IP packets is to install the open-source WinPcap capture driver, functional on Windows 98 and later.

@kermode - it works on raw sockets in winXP SP3, so it is portable for some users at least.

@Zadadka
No I'm not - a portable program is one that doesn't install files.

@SnowStorm:
It still isn't portable since it wants to install WinPCap

There is a more recent version of Wireshark (portable)

@Kermode : Portability describes the ability to carry and run an application from (eg) a USB stick, if necessary sharing Host resources. You are confused between that and Standalone applications.

@Psytechnic

A portable program is one that can run without having to install anything. If wireshark needs to install something its not portable.

chaneu, some info for you:

PortableFreeware excels in the number of available apps being that it has no input on the application development, it simply catalogues them and will catalogue freeware and open-source without discretion.

PortableApps work on open-source much more and there is a tighter regulation on releases. All apps from PortableApps have a 'app_portable.exe' NSIS script created executable frontloader with instructions for registry handling and application information disposal and being that they are the creators of the released portable versions, they can offer support on any issues of portability.

Although WinPCap is installed on launch of Wireshark Portable, it is uninstalled and cleaned up after the program closes. This is the purpose of the 'app_portable.exe' launcher, made by the PortableApps developers.

I am not a PortableApps developer or even an advocate, I am simply a guy who knows what the hell is going on in the programs I use. If you don't know about portability, don't comment on it.

I have been using smartsniff for some time now and I find it very reliable and useful! So from me a thumbs up, definitely no lameware nor malware. OK not as portable as a standalone application, still can be used without WinPCAP as indicated by DPSF thereby portable usage is possible! Export is also re-usable (when you now how to read it, thanks to the designer for supplying me with the requied information)!

SmartSniff has 3 different capture mechanisms: Raw sockets,
WinPcap, and the MS Network Monitor Driver.

linuxamp, the "portableapps" version is not truly portable, because the first time launched it install WinPCap

Wireshark (ethereal) now distributes a "portableapps" version

I'll also submit this to the forum.
