CubicExplorer is a customizable Explorer replacement that supports bookmarks, themes, and multiple tabs. "Sessions" can be set with various customizations set to a particular setting (e.g. a picture folder set to thumbnails, a logs folder set to "details" and a program folder with desktop-like icons), and multiple sessions can be set for different folder sets based on tasks such as work, home, play, etc.

Unlike similar programs, CubicExplorer is built for ease-of-use and ability to adapt to your environment rather than a broad feature set, but includes some advanced features such as filtering, file preview, search, a built-in text editor with syntax highlighting support, and more. Multiple instances of the program can be run simultaneously.

Note: main site offline; linking to Alternatively, CubicExplorer Portable adjusts paths in settings, bookmarks and sessions.

A nice interface and good looks but I'm concerned on the 95+% CPU usage.
I've been looking around and a lot of people seem to have found this problem

CubicExplorer 0.90 Final is today the last version.
A great simple and stable File manager with breadcrumb navigation, quickview, filters, drop stack window, bookmarks, sessions saving, many languages and skins. And there will be a next update with many new options (v.091).

I've been using it for months. Great app. Bookmarks panel is something I can't live with (you can bookmark anything: files, folders...). Filters work great. Drop box is a great idea. And it's improving since the developer reads the forum very often and listens to our prayers :)

OOOOpppss! I meant Bookmarks panel is something I can't live withOUT !! Sorry for the typo

After a long break the author has resumed work on Cubic Explorer. There haven't been any official version updates yet but the latest SVN snapshot (CubicExplorer is already a great improvement, check it out.

indeed, this seem to be a very nice file manager! especially if you like win7's windows explorer, and you're looking for something to replace xp's explorer, CubicExplorer is a very good alternative, offering similar features (like bookmarks panel) + a lot more

Excellent file manager. My fave of the lot.

Has anyone figured out how to bookmark the Desktop?

Nh 2011-06-24 08:35

just select Desktop in Folders panel, then right-click free area in Bookmarks panel and select Add Bookmark.

Thank-you! I had been trying to drag and drop it.

This works very well. Smooth operation and it has a good set of features. Loads 100s of graphic files in thumbnail view from multiple folders quickly compared to other apps of this type. Handy for comparing files in different folders.

Nh 2011-09-28 03:26

V0.95 writes settings to C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\CubicExplorer.
The previous stable version - V0.94 - is clear.

lautrepay 2011-09-29 06:00

@Nh: You need to specify in "settings.path" the location where Cubic Explorer will store the configuration files. The default value is %APPDATA%\CubicExplorer\, so you have to modify it to make the app portable.
I take this opportunity to ask webfork to correct the entry.

I've come to really love the interface, bookmarks, and tabs, but the PA version had some serious instability problems on Win7x64. Will try the natively portable version.

Outstanding file manager for when you constantly work with a set list of folders. The tabbed interface, bookmarks, and ability to save sessions makes navigating folders easy and simple. I would have great difficulty on Vista/Win7 without it.

rodger123 2012-10-15 05:34

Portable version on authors site does not write to the registry at all-I like the stack feature as I can drag files there and then drag them to a folder on my external drive,a little buggy but very useful-could not live without it!

hamasaki 2014-06-22 13:45

Very nice file manager. Really nice interface. A little buggy at times, but overall very good. I like the fact you can build your own tree via categories in the left menu, rather than the default c drive tree view others have. Means I can have only relevant folders showing.
