There is one huge thing missing from this utility - context menu integration. For a complete renaming utility, try Rename Master, available at Ane, yes, it is both free and portable.

USB_kx 2007-08-25 11:25

thers an option to add it in the send to menu

USB_kx 2007-08-25 11:25

of course, that would make it not portable.

cirex 2007-08-26 10:20

yeh, there is also option to add it to folders context menu, in settings. i think its a great app and def much better then this crappy rename master that gbj keeps advertising

USB_kx 2007-08-26 11:30

lol, you noticed gbj's comments in other threads as well.

The best rename utility I've tested, provides a clear and logical structure for individual or complex renaming tasks. Its menu anticipated a number of rename isses I threw at it and didn't require enormous reworking to get it to do what I wanted. Has made my life much easier.

Samalama 2008-08-21 00:05

No benefit over Rename Master which has more features and also v. quick for bulk renames. I agree with 'gjb' - try Rename Master, available at Been using it for years and is more comprehensive and totally portable/free

Works just as described. Neat little program.

gamiras 2008-09-02 22:01

Rename Master doesn't support unicode.

Gmacri 2008-10-14 06:46

This program with the last update (ReNamer 5.30) is now working very well.Is simple, and fast.
I don't know if it is the best but may be one of the best.

After using rename master for a long time. Finally decided to give a try to ReNamer and OMG what was I thinking. This program is really well put together. The flexibility and control it gives you is simple amazing.

I use this primarily to rename my digital pictures using EXIF data and it does a great job at that.

Smee 2010-03-31 12:41

Looks over-simple at first, BUT once you start using it & trying stuff, it is sooooooooo good. Well done. Master programmer! Good job !

twopoke06 2010-04-01 00:49

excellent renaming software. importantly, easy to use and WORKS! :)

Bob 2010-11-22 02:04

I agree with Smee - this is a deceptively powerful app that I now use exclusively. I actually run it portably from a truecrypt volume. Again, an awesome app that....... just works!!

zion 2011-01-23 02:38

A masterfully crafted little piece of software that made my life so much easier, it hits the mark bulls-eye, very clean, user friendly and damn powerful.

ReNamer beta versions up to "Beta53" have a problem; the "click to inline edit" behaviour was accidentally removed by the developer.
The issue has been fixed in version "Beta54". The forum thread on this topic is here:

the_watcher 2013-05-15 17:30

Since v5.70, displays a dialog box when run for the first time.

romulous 2013-08-22 09:29

It's actually v5.72, not v5.71.

romulous 2013-08-22 12:02

Actually, ignore that - looks like the website has just published the wrong version number on the News page. The News page says '5.72', the Downloads page says '5.71'. The changelog installed with the program says '5.71' and Help->About says '5.71'. So looks like it is 5.71.

smaragdus 2013-09-05 17:48

ReNamer version 5.72 is no longer FreeWare for non-commercial use, it is now CrippleWare- ReNamer Lite.

Ascend4nt 2013-09-05 17:54

I agree with smaragdus.. that's just sneaky and underhanded that the author would choose to cripple the product and not even provide links to older (uncrippled) versions. The two things that I see so far that weren't limitations before:
"* Maximum number of rules is limited to 5 in the Lite version.
* Maximum number of presets is limited to 5 in the Lite version."

outskirter 2013-09-06 15:57

@Ascend4nt: You can be just as sneaky, if you want: I just looked up the developer's website via the WayBack Machine ( and was able to download an older freeware version, 5.60, which happened to be the one I've been using all along. Never had any problems with it, either.

hamasaki 2013-09-06 18:57

Personally I prefer Rename Master.

Midas 2013-11-06 11:20

BTW, Rename Master, which is so insistently mentioned in ReNamer comments, has its own entry here at TPFC database:

PortablePotty 2013-11-12 07:00

i just created an account so i could link this for you guys. i just realized how this new version had limited me. not cool, ya know why? cuz the disablednessablity was not mentioned in the version history. so here, after much googling, v5.71 portable - idk how long it will last

Midas 2013-11-12 10:19

Thanks, PPotty; have now gotten portable ReNamer v5.71 -- the last non crippled, non Lite version released.

BTW, the CNet "secure download" in the link above produces the zip archive straight, not some frisky downloader...

MIKLO 2013-12-26 15:34

WTF with these lame ppl that come to DL some freeware and always gotta SELL their product...... so if ya like another pgm ppl can decide for themselves if they wanna use this or any other pgm without some spammer selling some BS....... Im just saying :wink

PortablePotty 2015-11-05 08:57

ok, long time since i've even bothered with looking at updating this program, but i thought of a silly solution to the 5 preset limit. if you want to get really silly it can deal with the 5 rules too. Only if you want the updated version, you can just have multiple folders of renamer. just have each folder be designated to the type of renaming yr doing. tbh im still sticking with 5.71

shnbwmn 2016-12-07 07:25

Are there any useful new features/additions in the newer versions since 5.71 that warrant upgrading?

Mixture 2016-12-08 17:03

I tried every version past 5.60 to see if upgrading was warranted. None were, so I found desktop version 5.60 and I'm staying with that.

shnbwmn 2016-12-08 20:41

webfork 2016-12-10 04:46

@shnbwmn There have been a TON of changes that you can check out in the Softpedia changelog, but I don't know if there's any crucial updates that you're missing out on with the old version. The program was one of my favorites before the change, but since there I've mostly switched to Ant Renamer.
