FileCommander is a feature-rich, multi-pane file manager that supports up to 4 simultaneous browser windows (enabled with "View", "Extended view"). File highlighting to separate different file types and comes with 3 different "themes," or skins. Includes a process list, folder comparison/synchronization tool, MD5 hash, file splitter, network monitor, virtual drives, file sharing, CD burner etc. ZIP, 7zip and RAR files are handled as folders and file preview tool (F3) allows a quick-view for a long list of file types. Additionally, the program includes an "open with" capability that supports relative pathways, allowing FileCommander to open files using other portable software.

Performance enhancements over regular Explorer include individual threads for each window so the rest of the program doesn't slow down during one window's process (e.g. CD spin-up, network delay). Internal clipboard means Windows' own clipboard will not be overwritten.

Update: after extensive use, although program had a lot of promise but its unfortunately really buggy. Drag and drop outside of the window doesn't work, wouldn't refresh a new cd that was inserted, and many, many minor glitches. Pass on this one.

Really amazed with this program. Lots and lots of features, plenty of power and management options. I overlooked this program way too long.

Yep, like it.
I mostly use FreeCommander but this one has its place as well. It handles browsing slow networks MUCH better than FreeCommander which just chokes and dies. Also nice to have 4 windows at times as well.

New website link:

The download link has also changed, but it currently brings a notice that the site has reached its traffic limit for the month, and that files will be available 2/20/2008

Great application! Brilliant concept!
Very useful in "certain" situations (for example if you work on 2 partitions and 2 dvd-rom's at the same time).

To answer BrazilGuy:
Go to View->View Style->One Window
Then go to View->Split Views->Left Vertical -> 50%

Now you get a horizontal split of the window.
I have spent just a couple of minutes with this app, but it looks nice and feels nice. I had problems with Free Commander as it will suddenly exit in the middle of something without any error message whatsoever, which in my book is almost as severe as a system crash as I don't know the state my files are left in.

My question is the same as BrazilGuy.
There is not a possibility of configuring the 4 windows
