This still the best freeware newsreader for binary groups indeed.
I've always set it up with subfolders for newsrc, sigs, and downloads. years ago, i dabbled with relative paths, in order to be able to copy the whole mess to another computer.
if i entered relative path to newsrc files, xnews worked for awhile. later it gave message .. that somehow had lost the path).
I suppose i could try environment variables in the path for a semi portabalizing.
I know the author has said this is a "completed" product as far as hes' concerned. But I wish he'd release the code to those who want to tweak it for modern systems and OSes.
I know this may be old, but still one of the best out there when used for binary groups.
Been using it for looooooooooong time now, and never felt the need to look for an alternative.
