Regshot is a small registry compare utility that allows you to take a snapshot of your registry make changes to your system (such as installing a program) and then taking a second snapshot to compare. The comparison report can be produced in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between the first and second snapshot. In addition, you can also specify folders (with subfolders) to be scanned for changes as well.

Alternatively, RegShot Portable automatically switches between 32 and 64-bit and adjusts paths.

System Requirements: Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
License: GPL
How to extract: Download the source + binary ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch regshot.exe.

Optionally, delete the src subfolder.
Similar/alternative apps: Regshot2 Unicode
What's new?
  • x64 and Unicode versions.
  • You can compare shots saved with different "UseLongRegHead" option.
  • Unicode shots have .hivu extension.
  • Loading ANSI hive files in Unicode builds and vice versa is not supported.
  • The skip list is now additionally checked against the single name of keys, values, dirs and files.
  • Internally Regshot always uses the short forms HKLM and HKU, so these have to be used in your skip lists too.

Can anyone confirm that UNDOReg cannot read the comparison .txt file generated by RegShot? I even downloaded an older RegShot version and still UNDOReg could not read that comparison .txt file. UNDOReg can read, though, the comparison .txt file generated by an old System Mechanic version that I got.

I have the same problem, the software UNDOReg CAN'T read the comparison .txt file generated by Regshot properly.

regshot 1.61e5 and 1.8.1 's comparison .txt can be read by UNDOReg, 1.7.2 can not .
1.8.1 need change a option in regshot.ini, check the readme.txt

Didn't try this yet, but supose you make use of SandBoxie portable and do your things in the sandbox, it must be possible to gather files and registry info without the need to use UNDOReg to clean up your system.

I notice that the comments refer to UNDOReg.
This is not actually in the Database (As far as I can see).
Is it portable?

Been using RegShot for years now. It has worked flawlessly every time. Definitely a 'must have' for anyone interested in what changed in their registry...

To JohnW: UNDOReg comes in an install exe but Uniex.. opens it without any trouble. You only nee the executable out of it and as far as I know it very portable.

For those of you who may not know, this is the application used by the maintainer(s?) of this site to determine if an application is portable.

For path portability you can use this option in Regshot.ini:

Here the added UNDOReg Option ...
V1.8.1 20070620
+ "UseLongRegHead" option added in regshot.ini to compatible with undoReg(1.46)
* "UseLongRegHead=1" means using "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" instead of "HKLM",default 0
* Do not compare shots saved with different "UseLongRegHead" option!

BTW: Yesterday there is a new RegShot 2 Unicode Version from HANDLE out - here in englisch ...

FR4NK5T3R 2011-03-24 13:42

How do I get this program to compare snapshots of the registry before and after a reboot?

JohnTHaller 2011-03-24 16:35

@FR4NK5T3R - Save them both and then use WinMerge Portable on them:

robertcollier4 - The Regshot2 you are posting about is a different app. It's either a totally different freeware app that copied the layout or an app illegally using the real Regshot's code as a base and not distributing the newer source as required by the GPL. Either way, this entry is about the real Regshot, which is open source, Unicode, portable and has 32-bit and 64-bit versions (the version even switches between them automatically). It's also under active development unlike 'RegShot2' which is abandoned.
