VirtuaWin is a highly customizable virtual desktop manager that lets you organize applications over a two or more "desktops" with their own separate windows and applications (also called "workspaces"). The program can reduce distractions or help organize a cluttered desk space with too many windows open.

Alternatively, a PortableApps version is also available.

Terrific for helping to create a greater sense of space on smaller monitors (like laptops). The best program available for multiple desktops on Windows reduces clutter, separates tasks, and allows you to manage large, multi-window projects. Extremely configurable to suit your tastes, so make sure you do some minor configuration tweaks to make it suit your preferences. Another great example of the power of open source software.

Have been using this program for around four months now and absolutely love it, and ecstatic that it's portable.

@bjasspa: Does the portable zip version support unicode for you? I can't seem to get that to work in the zip version. By the way, this project is really coming along well and the developer is very open to helping and developing solutions to users suggestions and problems. In terms of features this is the most robust yet still simple virtual desktop manager I've yet tried.

The portable version is ANSI. I asked the developer about it. He'll be releasing dual zip packages with the next release.

Virtual Desktop Fan 2008-05-11 14:33

@Ashghost Thanks! I was beginning to think the same. Glad to hear that both will be zip soon (no more special steps) :)

Yodm3D is better i think! It has better effects!

Virtua Win Yodm3D

Links to the download files on sourceforge are dead. I've notified the developer but no response yet.

Download link is working for me. FYI uses about 2.2MB of RAM, Yodm3D looks nicer, but probly at the cost of RAM usage.

VirtuaWin is a great program and I used it for a long time, but recently I've moved over to Dexpot (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1449. A lot more functionality (imho)

Very useful for multi-tasking. Also very useful for when you're browsing..ahem..questionable content and somebody walks in on you. Is it better/worse than Yodm 3d? I don't think so. I have them both Yodm is flashier, yes. But not as stable across systems, and yes it does take a little more juice to run.

Gave up on this. Kept randomly jumping between desktops. Very annoying and unproductive. But delighted to switch to Dexpot instead. Thanks for the heads up Anonymous Bear!

Very useful with 2 additional modules: VirtuaPlus & VWDesktopIcons: does what it is designed for, configured in a few minutes, simple and small - what more can I ask for? Dexpot looks very nice and offers more functionality - OK. But I can't stop it crunching my icons each time I change to the next desktop - VWin 4.1 doesn't do that!

Yes, the same with me with Dress up games

question: it keeps telling me that it failed to register the hotkeys 1/4. What does it mean through? it works just fine for me.

V4.3

webfork 2011-03-16 03:15

darkest: I think that refers to those keys being registered with some other program in Windows, but they may not be active. You can test this using ActiveHotkeys http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1770, but there's no way to find out what program has those keys registered. If its really annoying, I'd post on VirtuaWin's site to figure out how to suppress error msgs.

V4.3

This is best FREE+PORTABLE+LIGHTWEIGHT multi-desktop manager can manage up to 20 desktops. Much better than Despot, Monitors, Yo'3D.

V4.3

MnX 2012-10-13 15:03

This IS the one! Close enough to the Linux LXDE/OB style for me! I've got it set for 2 dt's and to switch with the cursor on Win 8 CP. I just wish I could figure out how to get it to run at startup. (I'm guessing because it's a portable, it doesn't show up in CCleaner startup list.)

V4.4

hamasaki 2015-02-28 04:09

@MnX: Can`t you just add an entry to your start folder?
