msi2xml didn't work for me. But I used 7-Zip. Since version 4.5.2 you can extract msi files. Then you have to extract the cab file and there are all the files you need

I haven't tryed this app, but there is a similar plugin for Firefox, Forecastfox ( which does the same thing, and updates data from AccuWeather about every half hour. And it's about 500kB, which is much smaller.

Surprisingly feature rich, I'm amazed its freeware. The user interface, forecast, visual options, and ability to synthesize voice to SAY the forecast. Someone was clearly looking to sell this product -- we're lucky to have it for free.

Only negative is that the program while running is bulky: 16 megs system memory for a program that gives you the weather? The program download itself is only around 4 megs.

Using Universal Extractor v1.5, msi2xml extraction failed here, however, MSI TC Packer extraction seems to have worked fine...

Wow, this is a really good weather sofware. Highly recommended!

Only seems to work for U.S. locations. Not in Canada, nor, presumably, elsewhere.

Gmacri 2008-04-03 17:24

It's working OK in South America countries
Great Job

Gidi 2008-04-03 19:51

Works ok for various international locations. However, when setting to metric unit only the current temp and wind are in metric, while the forecast remains in Farenheit (which is meaningless to anyone who is not American)

Gmacri 2008-04-04 16:44

I found that when the weather is updating, it takes lot of resources so the PC freeze. This is a of great consequence for the running programs. I think this fix would be a good idea in the next update.

Bad Bad! 2008-04-06 14:34

i havnt even click on option and the thing try to update itself. When updating its soooo slooooow! it freeze my system :(
and there's no way to even stop the thing than to use a process viewer to kill it >:(
i guess its only for America... not so usefull indeed

mjwiech 2008-07-11 04:10

You guessed wrong. It's NOT ONLY for America.
And the system will not freeze while WeatherMate updates itself.

This is a really nice weather program except it writes a start up entry to the registry.

Snidely Whiplash 2009-12-05 22:29

The start up entry in the registry may be removed by unchecking the "Start with Windows" box in the "Run" settings. Too bad it's turned on by default.

v3.4 weather forcast text does not always wrap correctly. No scroll bars so forcast greater than 3 lines is truncated. Not very useful for winter weather months here.

Grizzly Bear 2010-04-02 05:54

v3.4.2 still truncates forcast details greater than 3 lines.

MarkB 2011-03-16 12:37

An alternative (less pretty perhaps) is MetarWeather:

"The MetarWeather utility decodes METAR weather reports from around the world, and displays them in a simple weather report table. You can save the weather report into text, HTML or XML files. MetarWeather can decode METAR reports from a text file, or download the latest reports directly from the Internet."

Grizzly Bear 2011-03-28 22:22

v3.4.4 still truncates weather forecast details greater than 3 lines.

Just released Version 4.1 (15-MAR-2015) is unfortunately crashing (under XP, at least).

Developer Ravi Bhavnani swiftly confirmed the bug and promised a fix to be released next week in Version 4.2

__philippe 2015-03-22 15:57

Version 4.2, (released 22 Mar 2015)...right on the dot...;-)

Bug fixes:
- On Windows XP systems, the application crashes when attempting to create a shortcut on the desktop or in the Start menu's Startup folder.
- The application's up time (in the "About" window) is invalid on WinXP systems.
- Fixed intermittent network connectivity issues.

__philippe 2015-03-22 16:30

Ahem...close, but no cigar: WM 4.2 still buggy under XP...:-(
Bounced error-log back to developer...

hamasaki 2015-04-14 03:15

Doesn`t work for me in Windows 8.1. Appears for a second then disappears off screen.

__philippe 2015-04-19 16:16

WeatherMate 4.3 finally working under XP.
(just ignore the "Cannot create application shortcuts" warning)

During initial run, a tiny temperature icon is created in the system tray.
Thereafter, right click the icon to set personal options, such as position of main WM43 window, local preferences, forecasts display periods and so on.

Nifty app.
