@zorro: do you mean 'update_notifier.exe'? I haven't erased it but never found it in memory in my brief testing of Vivaldi... and I couldn't make the previous instructions work in a straightforward way, hence my last comment.

BTW, Vivaldi Standalone still saves loads of settings to 'HKCU\Software\Vivaldi'.

Midas on 2020-06-16 07:51

Zorro is absolutely right, even Vivaldi Standalone version registers 'update_notifier.exe' to auto-start with Windows -- something that somehow slipped by me in the previous test.

zorro on 2020-06-18 14:46

...well, there's more - I launch Vivaldi with my own batch file:
@echo off
REG IMPORT vivaldi.reg
start /wait "" "Application/vivaldi.exe"
REG EXPORT HKCU\Software\Vivaldi vivaldi.reg /y
REG DELETE "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Vivaldi" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google" /f
RD %LocalAppData%\Vivaldi /s /q
DEL %USERPROFILE%\.vivaldi_reporting_data /f /q
exit
You see, there's also HKCU\Software\Google and - came with version 2.9 - the ".vivaldi_reporting_data" directly in the userprofile.
It's a pity, but nothing that can't be handled with a batch file. Of course the biggest drawback remains the hardware binding of extensions and some settings...

“Over the years [Chrome] has gained a reputation for being something of a resource hog, gobbling up your PC’s memory like it’s going out of style.” Starting with version 108, the Chrome desktop browser has a feature called Memory Saver that deactivates tabs that aren’t currently being used. When a user accesses a deactivated tab, it automatically reloads. A user can turn Memory Saver on or off. A user can also exclude specific sites from Memory Saver, keeping tabs for those sites active. See:

I needed to connect to an onion site and downloaded the latest version (5.0.2) but Australis makes Tor Browser absolutely terrible and unusable- I do not want to install heaps of add-ons just to restore features the Mozilla idiots removed. I had an earlier version of Tor Browser (3.6.0- before the advent of the abominable Australis) but the perpetual blinking of the Tor button urging for update is unbearable and cannot be disabled. It can be removed from the tool-bar but this way one cannot acquire new identities.

Chromium is a fast, open source browser with a minimalist interface. The program is similar to Google Chrome and uses the same code base, but takes up less space and resources usage, has fewer tie-ins with Google, and generally better privacy. Unlike Google Chrome, it is missing proprietary audio and video codecs and there's no automatic update system.

Chromium is cross-platform with clients available for Mac, Linux, and ChromiumOS. X-Chromium is a wrapper program. Earlier versions are available for Win XP to 8.1, and 32-bit Win 10.

Note: X-Chromium's update cycle has in the past been many months apart. Using out-of-date web browsers is not recommended because they may be missing important vulnerability patches.

17.0.1 Beta is now in Download section of web site.

avada on 2018-10-05 04:48

Slimjet is not portable to any useful degree. Don't even try it. I lost all of my extensions and (all?) settings, browsing session. (Bookmarks, history remained...)

I didn't even move it I just reinstalled Windows, then started it from the same place (same path) and it erased all that stuff... (I checked in the backup that the extension files are there...)

nima_amin on 2020-05-21 22:12

The problem avada describes still persists in version 26. I used Slimjet portable on my Windows 7 PC with no problems. In February I moved to a new PC with Windows 10, copied Slimjet from the old PC on a USB stick, and from there to the new PC , started it and all extensions and settings were gone. Only the profiles and bookmarks were kept.

Flashpeak's "support forum" unfortunatel doesn't give any support but keeps claiming if you copy the user folder from one version into the other it would work. Lie! Behaviour is the same as that described by avada and me above.

To make things worse: in version 26 it is no longer possible to print content as PDF using PDF-printers such as e.g. Adobe Acrobat or PDF Creator! Flashpeak claims to have no plans to fix that bug.

Goanna engine version is 100% PWA able, but you need to save "link" manually (no "install to desktop" support).

It is a 51.4mb minimal install to USB drive vs Palemoon's 73.5mb.

Opera@USB is lighter at 18.1mb, but can no longer load youtube, and can not handle PWA apps

Correction & Note:

TL;DR: K-Melon Goanna engine is the LIGHTEST PWA ABLE WEBBROWSER @ 51mb on USB ready to use

CORRECTION:

K-Melon Goanna engine UPX'ed single language & default skin only = 51mb (53,566,636 bytes), making it the lightest PWA app able web browser avaible as of 2020-11-15

NOTE:

Gecko engine & Presto engine webbrowsers no longer load youtube, not will D-plus (dillo for windows) QtWeb or Netsuft (very sad)

K-melon (goanna version), then palemoon (current to "many" firefox extensions) & last, seamonkey (heaviest light but current to "almost all" firefox extensions) are lightest non-trident (IE11+, like Avante browser) that load Youtube & web sites with HTTP5; 100% CORRECTLY

Qupzilla is getting a little memory hungry. I have removed this from my favorites list.

If you want a barebones browser that uses little memory, I would recommend the latest version of K-Meleon.

smaragdus on 2017-02-04 16:56

@billon
At first look QupZilla version 2.1.0 seems to have improved significantly compared to version 2.0.2, but it uses far more resources compared to version 1.8.9. I did just a brief testing.

freakazoid on 2017-02-11 22:46

I can confirm what smaragdus said about v2.1.0.

Memory usage hovers around 120-140 MB RAM, but that is to be expected when the core engine is now updated to use QtWebEngine, which is powered by Chromium. To compare, I had an older version of Qupzilla v1.8.6 lying around and that used 210 MB RAM.

It's a good alternative to the existing Chromium-powered browsers, but if you're using a Chromium backend, you might as well use Chromium so you can gain access to the wealth of available extensions out there rather than some homebrewed versions that come with QupZilla.

UPDATED TO 12.18!!!11
no changelog yet on off. page

Specular on 2016-02-16 07:31

@billon mmm, it's odd. Just had a pop-up informing of a new version to download which is apparently v12.18 yet no official changelog has been released.

However did find an old My Opera stalwart who posted some of the changes over on the Vivaldi forums. Will continue this discussion on the PF thread...

QtWeb v3.8.5

billon on 4 Feb 2017
  • 8MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 9 Sep 2013
  • Suggested by I am Baas

QtWeb is a web browser focused on strong privacy and a clean environment. While running, no traces are left on the host machine while browsing and none are left behind after a browser "reset" in the privacy menu. All toolbars, including navigation bar, can be turned off or docked anywhere, and even moved outside the main browsing window. Includes built-in support for Torrent downloads and ad-blocking functionality can be easily enabled.

Based on Qt framework and Apple's WebKit rendering engine (also used by Apple Safari).

Security note: development of this browser appears to have stalled and the software may be subject to security vulnerabilities.

Not bad but can't work with Java.

I was worried that QtWeb was as dead as K-meleon. It hadn't been updated in more than a year. Thankfully, I was wrong.

QtWeb makes for a great secondary browser or portable browser, or even as a primary browser if you don't like bloatware. It's small and fits on a flash ram of at least 2GB, and contains all modern web technologies except java.

The lack of java isn't a problem for those who don't visit sites laden with that crap. It works with adobe flash, so youtube and other sites work fine.

The only downside to QtWeb is a lack of plugins or extensions. It would be nice to have an adblocker (especially for youtube) or other content blocker.

I adjusted the entry for the fact that Qt is now a publicly traded company, no longer owned by Digia. (Funnily enough, it's traded in Nasdaq Helsinki, of all stock exchanges...)
