God I hate spammers. Personally I think they should all be castrated and then have to sit in bleach.

Christ is this the same brain dead spammer as last time? Maybe we need to start blocking known spammer IPs.

Despite that piece of news, I decided to continue using AntiVir myself.

I haven't got the Uniblue ads at all, because I haven't registered my copy of AntiVir (so they don't know my email address) and I have disabled the daily nag screen with a hack.

In addition, I declined to install the WebGuard module (it has never been a part of AntiVir Personal), so I didn't need to install the Ask toolbar either.

Anyway, that piece of news shows that Avira has changed its business model. :( I may speed up switching to MSE (I originally planned to do it after installing Windows 8), especially if Avira continues with this direction.

And so, free security products are getting "better and better" ...

Here is the problem. Avira says that the toolbar is optional but clicking the Install later button only temporarily closes the popup alert. The popup window will continue to show whenever Windows is booted up and will only stop nagging you until the Avira SearchFree Toolbar is installed.

That's not true, as the author himself acknowledges in the comments. The popup window won't be displayed after clicking "Install later" three times.

(In addition, after cleaning the Temp folder you'll see a different popup window. It won't come back after dismissing it three times, even after cleaning the folder again.)

I know this is an old thread, but I'm reviving it just to say that I had so many troubles with Avira lately (after being a very satisfied user for a couple of years) that I ended up uninstalling it.

Following tips found here and elsewhere, I installed MS Security Essentials, too. I now have some occasional lagging (to be expected, it's MurkySoft after all ), but pretty much everything else is running cool. Bye bye, false positives galore...

I use MS Security Essentials on my main computer at work (HP laptop) with absolutely no problems for more than a year. I was really impressed by it. But at home it slowed my machine from time to time, exactly like you say so I uninstalled it. I am still using Avast Free and we learned to live with each other, for now.
