Hi

Extract with Universal Extractor.

It looks portable to me, but it will need someone with some skill to tell you if it is or not.

Thanks

writes to registry and creates folder in user documents but this batch should take care of that:

Code: Select all

@echo off
cd app
start /wait FormatFactory.exe
cd "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents"
rmdir /q /s "FFOutput"
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FormatFactory" /f
*to use download .zip extract the installer and use uni-extract. move all program files to a folder called App and save the batch outside of that folder*

the batch compiled to an exe: (74.5 KB)

pre-packaged sfx with launcher and program files already set up: (19.36 MB)

Cool tool & thanks 4 your work on the portable mod batch.

Say pplknownothin, as long as you are going around making video file converters portable....why not give winFF a shot.

A few tips:

1st: There may be a local installation of FormatFactory, so you should backup C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents\ and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FormatFactory.

2nd: You should use %HOMEDRIVE% and %HOMEPATH% variables instead of C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents\. (%HOMEDRIVE%\%HOMEPATH%\My Documents)

3rd: reg delete only works on WinXP, so you should create a file named "delete.reg" and inside that file, write:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FormatFactory]

Then, to delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FormatFactory, you should use "regedit.exe /s delete.reg"

Sorry, but to do its job, Format Factory has to create/modify many CLSID keys with InProcServer subkeys. This is necessary, because it has to capture information about the various video and audio types.

To make it portable requires at minimum acknowledging all these keys, as well as the HKCU key.

While I do prefer Format Factory to WinFF, I acknowledge that it is neither stealth nor at all portable, and have to treat it as such.

@Cornflower, If you would be so kind as to list those registry keys, I could write a batch file which would back up/delete/restore those keys upon program exit/entry.

This, of course, is a kludge and not "true" stealth or portability, but would get us a step or two closer...

What do you think?

Problem is that this kludge would be just that and not make it a viable addition (IMHO) for the DB unless ofcourse you were to go so far as to make a Portableapps.com style launcher (still IMHO messy but . . . I guess acceptable to many)

I know it's just that, and that's just as I offered it, FWIW.
It seems to me that if the app insists on writing to and reading from the registry (which is my experience), then it cannot be truly portable, but perhaps this kludge could help in some cases.
Due to the above, I wouldn't even bother making a launcher (but I'd make an equivalent batch file, along with supporting files).
If there's no interest, then no worries - I'm busy enough as it is! :D

Oh, one more thing - because this app wasn't looking too promising, as well as due to the fact that its latest versions also seemed to exhibit "call home" tendencies, I looked at other options, and the XMedia Recode looks quite promising! (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.p ... dia+recode)

Salutations,

I can try to capture them tonight, but when it comes to InProcServer, I have another worry. You have to make sure they don't exist when you add/change them because they may be used for other software, so in removing them, if you are not careful, you can mess up your system. This is because these are the same InProcServer keys etc., that other audio or video software or codecs use.

Hmm, so we seem to be wading further into murky waters... Maybe this isn't a good idea after all...

I've found that I can modify just the HK_CU key and it works ok, but things will still remain behind, so it's really not stealthy at all, and I haven't tested it extensively.

Anyway, as I said, I've moved on... That "extra" background behaviour concerns me...
As I said, also, XMedia Recode looks quite promising, and seems quite portable (haven't had a chance to trace it yet).

XMedia Recode is an excellent piece of software, I personally wouldn't try any other Media formatting since this has helped me on more than one occasion.

Thanks for the feedback, Guinness, I was starting to have my doubts after it crashed for the second time trying to convert a vob to mp4 (617 Meg vob, crashed after 3.5%/1.8M).
Anyway, many variables to consider, so I'm not giving up yet! :D

Cheers!
(/hoists a pint of G)

P.S.: Yes, I know it's getting off track - I'll take the XMedia Recode dialog to the appropriate forum (once I find it!)
