What is HEIC file?
High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF), also known as High Efficiency Image Coding (HEIC), is a file format for individual images and image sequences. It was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and is defined by MPEG-H Part 12 (ISO/IEC 23008-12).

Generally, HEIC will be used by default on new photos on iOS 11, and it's designed to save you storage space.

Thanks and welcome to the site. Are you the developer?

Looks great but I've never actually seen an HEIC, which is interesting as a lot of tools support it according to the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Effi ... ile_Format

Softpedia seems to only list other converters so ... at least from here it looks like HEIC is just a stepping-stone format, meaning you're just going to bump it to something people use https://www.softpedia.com/dyn-search.ph ... _term=heic

Anyway, the wikipedia entry is a little light on info.  Do you know if it supports animation?  Any idea why it's smaller?  Cuz technology?

While I'm a little more interested in the AVIF as it's open source and (hopefully) going to see wide support, basically anything Apple does means that's it's now something many of us have to cope with.  So good to have tools like this.

EDIT: Snapfiles is listing this program as one of their more popular downloads: https://www.snapfiles.com/get/heicfile.html

EDIT2: The program is now present on the Softpedia link I posted above. Here's the official entry: https://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedi ... Free.shtml

I'm not the OP, but the answer to both questions is yes.

A bit longer answer to why HEIF is more efficient than JPEG is that JPEG is an ancient format. The JPEG format is from 1992! It predates Windows 95!

HEIF is based on the same technology as HEVC (aka H.265), which allows it to completely crush JPEG on efficiency.

Like you, I'm more interested in AVIF because it's an open format. No one should be using closed image formats in the 2020s. Only owners of such formats benefit (and Apple is one, they're a member of MPEG LA which holds HEVC patents).

I seem to remember reading a breakdown from the folks at mozjpeg talking about their effort to improve compression with that format because it was the best available, but is it? 1992. I guess they were trying to hold off until AVIF was ready.

It's one of the things I think sites like ours can make a real impact on: we help popularize tools that avoid patent-heavy or otherwise problematic formats and protocols. Hopefully we can be a part of AVIF's success.

So this thread is showing up very high in search engine results connected to the HEIC format, so I've put together a few updates for visitors:
This just kicked in on my iOS device with the recent update and I immediately turned it off. That said, I have a reasonable amount of space on my device, but other users may want to squeeze more pictures onto their phone.

(For lack of a better option,) Quick note to point that according to its changelog the latest version of FileVoyager (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2826) now supports HEIC. It still requires an extra plugin, though. :|

Have you tested this? I mean, does it read standard HEIC images?

Asking because it could strike yet another format from my NKV wishlist...

No. No occasions, actually never meet AVIF images in the wild.

You mean AVIF images? Or... What did you mean?

Sorry, I just assumed it was, as the previous discussion was about HEIC.

Well, looks like they're related formats although not the same...

Thank you very much! This software helped a lot. (It’s also good that it supports batch processing.)
