Thanks for posting this! I had read about OpenToonz open source release some months ago, however wasn't aware of this recent portable version.
Edit: I think it's important to note that this is
traditional animation software, complete with
xsheets and all. This is fundamentally different from producing animation in software like
After Effects or
Synfig, which is basically
limited animation software. In those software you would create vector shapes and
tween them between keyframes. Traditional animation (a la Disney) requires
frame-by-frame drawing, and a decent knowledge of the
animation principles.
That said, I'm f**king stoked that it's open source and free for all uses! We're talking
Toon Boom quality software right here folks.
Edit 2:
The
download section on the hompage (scroll down) includes GTS, a scanning program, and some effect plugins (the latter goes in
OpenToonz/stuff/plugins in the portable version).

Old thread update: so this program has one of the more amusing "terms of use" I've ever seen.
https://opentoonz.github.io/e/download/opentoonz.html
When User use OpenToonz, it shall NOT do the following acts; ... offensive acts to public order and morality (including anti-social activities and their promotion) ... doing economical and/or spiritual harm to Dwango or third parties
Wow.
There's some discussion of the terms
over on Github, where they seem to have decided it's irrelevant.

Was interested in checking this out for some family/friends that are into animation. The site only has the 1.3 setup download so I did a search for "OpenToonzPortable.1.1.zip" and the second hit shows Portable Freeware Collection Forums but with a different url that triggers a security alert. https:\\klein_toshibanetcam... I changed it a bit so noone clicks on it.

Yeah there are a lot of sites that scrape available data and then just replace the links with malware. It's one of the reasons that, although I like to try new and unique programs, on the browser side I stick with one of the majors (in my case Firefox) as they tend to have some kind of security blocklist. Out of curiosity, what search engine did you use?

I keep telling myself to stop using it but.... Google
I set all my Linux installs to use DuckDuckGo.

It's still far and away the most common search tool and our rankings are actually better there than on other search engines, so arguably we should be checking that first. I just assumed it was another service as that malware blocklist I mentioned for both Firefox and Chrome is largely managed by Google. Some still get through, I guess.

So the latest version of this (
1.3.12) came out just about a month ago.
Synfig has a
portable version, but it's currently untested - Download here:
https://www.fosshub.com/Synfig.html
Alternatively:
* WinPenPack version:
http://www.winpenpack.com/en/download.php?view.1275 (discussion about this version:
https://forums.synfig.org/t/portable-ve ... dows/746/7)
* PA thread updated most recently this time last year:
https://portableapps.com/node/32918
I'll break this off into a separate thread if discussion goes anywhere, but for the moment, I'm keeping it under a broad animation heading of OpenToonz.
