There are certain kind of programs (like Telegram) that may become obsolete from one version to another, so sometimes I'd rather wait and make sure that the developer's intention is to continue releasing portable versions of the application. Telegram has portable versions for more than two years ago, so I think it would be safe to add it to the database.
Excellent answer. I might suggest adding this to the FAQ in the future.

@webfork
Should we suggest one in the entry so someone can quickly and easily get started with the program?
I don't think that Jabber is a chat protocol suitable for the masses since it requires some more efforts the masses are used to spend.
I don't think that someone who doesn't have even a basic idea about Jabber protocol would be ever tempted to try a Jabber client.
There are numerous Jabber servers that offer free registration but I think that it is not acceptable to recommend a server since I have tested just several. From time to time a Jabber server goes offline or stops offering registration (the latter happened with the first Jabber server I registered at- jabber.org).

Below I will provide a list of some public Jabber servers that offer (or once offered- I don't know when these lists were last updated) free registration:

https://list.jabber.at/
https://www.jabberes.org/servers/
https://www.jabjab.de/servers/index.html

One can test a Jabber server using IM Observatory.

A very old Jabber manual.

@lautrepay

I definitely think that Telegram is a very good (and seemingly very secure) program and that it can be useful too, but I wondered whether it is suitable for our database since it requires a registration via phone (the user account is associated to a phone number).

I added something to the entry about Full vs. normal.

Also, I was thinking of linking the entry to a XMPP free registration portal like this one: https://xmpp.net/directory.php ... thoughts?

Thanks for your post- it served as reminder for me to post about Gajim:

Edit
DuckDuckGo closed their Jabber server:
UPDATE (May 19th, 2017)

On Thursday May 18th, 2017 we shut down our dukgo.com XMPP service. Thanks for your continued support over the previous years.

For alternative XMPP servers check out http://www.cryptoparty.in/connect/contact/jabber and gultsch.de/compliance_ranked.html

As a punishment I consider switching my browsers from DuckDuckGo to Ecosia.
