Tested nomacs v1.6.4-x64 portable. Still not portable (confusing, isn't it? :) ).
But found a nice video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pydMeEbnzA8

I checked my registry and found these nomacs keys:
nomacs 3.2.0 - 2016-05-07 - 004.png
nomacs 3.2.0 - 2016-05-07 - 004.png (7.26 KiB) Viewed 52270 times
Then I contacted one of the developers (Markus Diem) blaming him that the portable version wasn't portable:
The so called nomacs portable is not portable at all- it writes to Windows registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\nomacs)...
He was kind to respond immediately:
This is not true. I just checked it on a clean virtual machine. All settings are written to the settings.nfo which is contained in the nomacs portable folder. If you delete this file - nomacs will fall back to the registry.
Obviously the registry records were from previous versions of nomacs I once used. So I deleted them and ran nomacs-3.2.0.zip afresh and now I can confirm that nomacs version 3.2.0 is portable- settings saved in settings.nfo inside program folder. I am Baas, please connfirm.

@I am Baas
Thanks for the test. All these lines were written by nomacs? Or just the last 3 ones?

@moderators
Please move this thread to the Portable Freeware Submission sub-forum.

All by nomacs; I tested on a clean machine in a sandboxed environment and I have never used IrfanView, Picasa, or Photoshop before.

Hmm. I just tested v3.4.0 in Sandboxie with RegFromApp and no Registry entries were created apart from the standard MuiCache ones. I wonder if this has to do with the testing environment.

Same here, clean machine, Win 7.64, sandboxed, and no admin privileges. I still get the registry entries. Can you launch nomacs 3.4 open an image and then exit. Launch regedit and manually verify you don't have those keys? Thanks.

Just to note, I use Photoshop and apparently have QtProject for something (I checked all the entries before launch) so the following registry entries existed previously on my system:

Code: Select all

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellCompatibility\Applications\photoshop.exe
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QtProject\OrganizationDefaults\Qt
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QtProject\OrganizationDefaults
So for my non-Sandboxed test I was looking for these entries:

Code: Select all

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Picasa
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IrfanView\Shell
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QtProject\OrganizationDefaults\FileDialog
The first two did appear following an unsandboxed launch of nomacs. Was FileDialog meant to be a 'sub-directory' (whatever it's called) in the registry or a value? As I have a 'filedialog' value there already in the \Qt\ tree and looking at the binary value it links to an old directory I used once for a mosaic generator program.

My guess is the program is creating something similar to 'open with' values (Irfanview, Picasa, Photoshop). Who knows, but I can confirm these keys are created.
